Hi, I hope this is in the right section, if not would one of the mods please move it to the right section. Anyways, I swapped an 'ordinary' Intel Pentium 4 cpu for an Intel Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading on a desktop running Vista 32 bit. While restarting, 4 green bars move along the white box at the bottom and then everything freezes. Have to do a hard reset to get control back. Strangely enough, the OS loads fully if I start the computer in Safe Mode, can't figure that out. In the Device Manager there are no ticks or yellow triangles showing up either and the new cpu shows up and also when I run Everest Home Edition.

If you have (or can get) a vista disk, I'd boot from that and go through the 'repair' process

else look at the event viewer when booting into safe mode, and see if you can work out whats causing the stall during the normal boot process

did you reinstall vista after changing CPU, I would imagine that would be necessary to make it run properly, No?

Try re-installing the chipset driver in safe mode.

Perhaps you need to update the BIOS on the motherboard. Have a look at the motherboards supported CPU list on the manufacturers website.
