Can you put an off-road tyre onto a road tyre?

    Hey all,

Does anyone know if I can change my on-road to an off-road tyre, so that I'd have better grip when cycling along canals, or on park land? My current tyre is 3cm in width, and I don't know if I'd be able to just put on a different tyre?

Also, would anyone know if a wider wheel would fit onto the current frame, or not? This may allow me to get a sturdier wheel.

Moved from AH to Cycling. Please note their charter now applies.

Do you know if your wheels are 26" (mountain bike wheel) or 700c (28" diameter 'road' wheel)? That will determine what tyres you can pick. You probably won't fit anything wider than what you have right now because of your mudguards but you might get something more knobbly for grip in mud.

Your second question about a sturdy wheel - a sturdier wheel would have the same axle width and same (or very similar) rim width, just maybe more spokes, so no issue there. You probably don't need a sturdier wheel though.
