Self-Employed Contractor

I recently had a job interview for a nice job that I think I'm quite suited for. Even got a second stage interview. The one caveat that bothers me a little is that they want to a self-employed contractor who works from home. They pay me my gross pay and leave everything else up to me. How does this work for me tax-wise. Does it really make much of a difference? And what if I lose my job, am I entitled to any benefits. Finding information on the internet is a bit scarce.
