Following on from last years thread here

    Hi all

This is just a reminder to stock up on coal and briquettes before the 30th of April 2014 as the second phase carbon tax will be added from the 1st of may.

The tax will apply to all smokeless and bituminous coals, lignite fuels, union nuggets and peat products.

The only area exempt from carbon tax are 100% wood products eg wood pellets, eco logs ect.

The increase of €10 per ton of carbon breaks down to a €1.20 increase per bag of 40kg coal.
The total added cost when it comes into effect will be €2.40 per 40kg bag since may 2013.

It will also increase the cost of 1 bale of Bord Na Mona briquettes by 26 cent.
The total added cost when it comes into effect will be 52c per bale since May 2013.

If you had the space to stock up now for next winter now say a ton of coal (25 bags) and half a ton of briquettes (40 bales) you could save over €40 based on this comming years increase alone!!

Just a reminder about it as its seemed to have fallen under the radar of these hidden taxes.

Hope this is ok to put here if not mods please remove it.

Theres an online petition by the solid fuel trade group asking the goverment to pospone the second phase of the tax which may be signed if you wish

    PETITION
    Thanks

Look at it this way 10% off coal until 1st of May, nationwide. If it was 15c off petrol or diesel you'd be excited.

So how much do you wanna pay for a bag of coal or a bale of briquettes in the future?
All these stupid sneaky stealth taxes take more and more money from the pockets of people.

if the east european hand bag competion explodes into fisticuffs it would be wise to have stocks of all sorts in place.

Thanks for the reminder of this Bargain Alert...

Should be in politics, not a bargain.

What like you "save" 10% if you buy fuel before May - not a "bargain" in my mind

Still,it'll get more exposure here.I forgot about it despite my local coal merchant warning me.Feckin' Green Party don't even exist but their policies do.
Carbon Tax me hole, just another stealth tax as more & more people move to solid fuel for heating.

Definitely not a bargain alert, everything increased in the annual government budget could be classed as a bargain if bought pre-budget at that rate, not trying to knock the OP as it's useful info though.

I have a chainsaw, several dozen acress of trees, several hundred freshly storm knocked trees and a peat bog all contained within my own land. I won't be buying coal for a long time, getting a new stove installed this spring and will have about 80 -90% of home heating derived from home produced fuel. Will keep the oil as a back up but I estimate I will go from 1,800litres of Kerosene per year down to around 300litres using a new 24Kwh stove and pumped shower to replace the Oil for heating and electric shower. I am estimating savings of over €1,000 per year for a about one weekend on chainsaw work and a few hours in the evenings turning turf in the summer.

Aren't you fortunate to have those resources? I doubt that you're helping anyone on this forum by boasting about them.

There's a strong argument for a flat tax on agricultural land and your post endorses it.

Ok fair enough, it's not a real bargain alert but much thanks to the OP for reminding me of it! Oh yes, and thanks to the Greens too, good riddance to the lot of them....

Is this the last of it. Will we see a similar increase next year. Another excuse to push up electric prices.

So the moral of the story is we should all buy a few dozen acres of forested land to save 26 cent on a bale of briquettes......

Expect increases periodically whilst we all just sit around and accept them

The last time the British elite tried that the country descended into anarchy. I very doubt the Government will bother with the custodians of the countryside.

I say fair play to him,its an honest simple post.Just because it upsets you or doesnt sit well with you doesnt give you the right to bash him for his post.:(
I have free firewood,I have access to unlimited amounts of trees and tree trunks, far more than I actually need.I use my chainsaw and log splitter to cut them up and then I season them for a good year or 2.I burn the free firewood in my stove and heat my house this way, aswell as my solar panels for hot water.
So do you want to bash me now for posting about it?

I also held onto all the empty pallets from my recent house build.I let all the pallets air dry under a tarpaulin down at the back of the garden.I use my table saw in my garage to cut the pallets down to size and then use my log splitter to make lots of kindling about 8 inches long by 3/4 inch inch thick.1 pallet gives me around 8 full sized net bags of kindling.A large net bag of kindling would cost me about 3 euro 50 cents to 4 euro in fuel depot or diy store. So its better for me to make good use of my pallets.

Just Bumping up as only a little over 2 weeks to go.

Over 8500 signatures were given to Michael Noonan last week asking for the doubling of the carbon tax to be postponed or scraped but no response was given yet so it looks like it will go ahead

    Attached letter to the minster

Kudos for getting off your behind and doing what fewer and fewer are doing nowadays - hard physical labour. You are an inspiration!
