Relocating, when to tell employer?

I'm considering relocating nationally, far enough that I would no longer be within commuting distance for my current job, and I'm wondering when to tell my boss.

If I was going to leave my job I'd probably just go with a few weeks above the required 1 month notice period. However, I want to have a conversation about the possibility of staying in my role but working from my new home (unfortunately my company has no offices in my desired destination). I'm not taking it for granted that they will agree but my job is such that it can be done from home & a couple of others in my team work from their homes in other countries so fingers crossed.

When is a good time to tell my boss I'm moving & start this conversation? I'm thinking 3-4 months beforehand as I'll just be back from a trip my desired destination & will have effectively finalised my decision at that point. Once the decision has been made, I'm not sure I have reason to keep it from them. Is this too early or late?

I would suggest that once you have made your final decision and fully committed to this move, then that would be the time to inform your boss. I would also say that the timing of this conversation is important. Catching him in a bad mood, stressed or under pressure will not help you. And make sure both of you have enough time for this conversation, perhaps outside working hours?

Honesty will be the best thing here.

Thanks, I have one-to-one meetings with my boss once a month, usually over a coffee. There's one scheduled the week after I get back from my trip & I think that may be the best time to bring it up.
