Notice of penalty points Tipperary

I recently got a speeding notice from the Tipperary Garda, after I was captured speeding on camera. I paid the fine & received a receipt on 22nd January.

I have yet to receive a notice of penalty points, but I know I am due 2 points. When my wife had a similar incident last year she received the penalty points notice within 2 weeks.

Is there a way to check online if the points have been served?

If not & I don't receive a notice by the time my insurance is up for renewal, should I inform the insurance company?

    thanks

You should tell them you have points pending since you know they're coming. It's unlikely to affect your policy if they're the only 2 you have.

I thought that they were applied to your license when you pay the fine, well they were to mine when I paid via the post office.
They asked for my license when I paid the fine at the post office and they were added/applied to my license from that date.

I'm surprised no one thought to look it up.

Points take effect 28 days from the date a letter is issued by the RSA telling you points have been applied, not from the date you pay the fine or committed the offence. It could take 56 days or more for the letter be issued.

As for finding out if points are applied :
How do I find out how many penalty points I have on my driving licence?
To find out how many penalty points are on your driving licence record, contact the Road Safety Authority at 1890 41 61 41 and quote your driving licence number.

    Thanks

Good to hear in these days of a pervasive internet we can only find out the information by making a phone call. Makes me feel young again :)

BTW - do the points expire based on the date they take effect or the date of the offence? Seems unfair that I could face an extra 56+28 days of having the points

It's all in the link I provided, 3 years from the date they take effect. You're not facing an extra 56+28 days of having points because during those 56+28 days you don't actually have the points!

Anyway the 56 days are to allow payment of the fine, which you have done, so you might get the letter much sooner.

Op was it out side Thurles by any chance?

    Nope - N24, Bohercrow, Tipp

Its a moot point but I still think the 28+56 days is unfair. It would be small consolation to me if I get points that push me over the 12 limit in 3 years time to think "o well at least I had 0 points for the first 3 months after my initial speeding offence".

I can see the logic of them not applying until I pay the fine, but if the RSA take an additional 5+ weeks (and still counting) to issue the letter and then I wait another 28 days for them to be effective then thats sixty odd extra days in 2017 that I may be sweating it out. I bet if I am on 10 points & get pictured speeding on 2nd Jan 2017 it wont take them that long to apply the points then ....

Everything is done slowly and awkwardly. Everything:D. Theyre gone a bit mad in Tipp, particularly around Thurles, hiding in walls as your leaving town and everything. I wouldn't sweat it tbh. Most companies ask only "Do you have three or more (or five or more) penalty points?" on the subject.
You simply have to say "No" if you have two (or four).

My wife has four points - she got snapped on the way to & on the way back from the tip in Inagh (Clare), 15 minutes apart. When we got the letters she said "Oh, I wondered what that strange looking car was doing parked there" :)

Ah here:D If its parked and has either "D" or "KE" on its plates just play safe and check the speedo. Bugger when it happens but try to keep the points low. I think (though I stand for correction here) any points recieved after the first offence, while the first points are still in effect, take much longer to be cleared, up to five years or something.

    EDIT: nope, that's not true:o

I suppose all that sweating is an unwritten aspect of the penalty and deterrent for the next time :p
If you had to go to court you'd likely be sweating for much longer.
