    Hi
My wife finished work this week by choice. She also found out she is pregnant this week. She has worked constantly for 12 years until now. Does she qualify for state maternity benefit or does she have to be in employment?
    Thanks

Maternity Benefit is paid by the Department of Social Protection to women who have a certain number of paid PRSI contributions on their social insurance record and who are in insurable employment up to the first day of their maternity leave. The last day of work can be within 16 weeks of the end of the week your baby is due.

its just the rules...she can get a part time work..and will still be eligible for full benefits depending on her prsi contributions in the previous years

You say she has finished up, is there a possibility that she can extend her finish date? Once she gets past the 24th week of pregnancy she could start her maternity leave. If not then she would need to put up a stamp via an alternative employment in or past the 24th week, an eligible stamp would mean earning as little as €38.

Does that mean that she could find a partime gig for the 24th week and be eligible as she has worked constant since 2001
