What tyres?

    Hi.

I've recently changed work locations and have gone from 10k miles a year to 25k miles a year in a Diesel Mondeo. I need 2 new rear tyres and normally I'd go for the cheapest option but I'm wondering is that cost effective with my current milage?

What would be a good tyre to get and roughly what should 2 tyres cost?

    Thanks.

Surely a given tyre would wear out after a certain number of miles, so you would get (say) 20k miles out of an €80 tyre, regardless of whether you did those miles in 9 months or two years?

That would be my assumption... but maybe someone more expert can advise.

Personally though I would not skimp on tyres whether I was doing 5,000 miles or 50,000 miles a year. They're all that stop you from going into the ditch (great brakes don't make up for crappy tyres).

Personally I go with Continentals (EcoContact) on my Accord - they cost about €90 per corner IIRC.

Cheap tyres are generally cheap because they meet minimum standards. If you are doing 25k miles a year then buying good quality tyres that keep you safe on the road should be a priority rather than the aim of saving a few quid in the short term. Also there are plenty of good quality branded tyres out there that will do the job well that don't cost top dollar.

I got two matadors to get me out of a hole. Very impressed I must say! 70 for 215/45/17 I think they're great value!

Lassa tires have great grip and last ages. 20/22 k miles on a 02 diesel avensis with about half town driving half dual carriageway.

And I only changed them then cos we were getting alot of surface water and wanted better clearance. If it was summer id have left them another while.

My mother got them Eco contact3 last year. Didn't even get a year out of them. They are a good true brand

Goodyear excellence are a great tyre to last wear wise. We got 40k km out of a set on the front of an octavia and far more out of a set on the back. They also gave great grip. There not that expensive either depending on size.

unless your a really hard driver and push the car very hard your not going to notice a grip difference between a cheap and dear tyre.. a cheap tyre will generally have a harder compound wont be as grippy and will last longer, the less grip a tyre gives you the better it is for your mpg less friction ect, so a expensive tyre that offers good grip will probably have a softer compound will offer good grip be worse for your mpg and wear quicker.

And you can have the exact same tyres on the same car one set will last 10k the other 30k all down too the driver at the end of the day

One that's good in the wet and the dry (all-weather tyres for Ireland), will give decent mileage and two should cost roughly twice as much as one.

Until you try to brake hard
My tyres let me corner and change direction so I can drive at the speed limit on twisty roads but they also let me outbrake the uninitiated
In the winter I run Verdi all weathers and sometimes I see how much more grip I have day in day out
I do 600 miles (1000km sounds more) a week and I truly believe that tyres are the difference between crashes and no crashes (less crashes)

thats one thing we should do in this country but dont get different tyres for winter and more wet weather tyres but the only thing most people worry about when buying tyres is price

5th gear did a test on tyres before on a new clio it had fancy michelins standard great for fuel economy crap from grip and breaking, they tested a cheap set made economy worse but better grip then the set of tyres that one the brake test was 4 odd part worns 2 of which were winter tyres.. winter tyres do offer serious grip

Best value for money would be Uniroyals Rain Sport 3, Goodyear Efficiency Grip Performance, Dunlop SP Blue Response and Vredestein Sportrac 5.
I have had the Dunlops on my Subaru for the past 25k miles and they are due for replacement. Very good tyre in all road conditions.

Got myself some new uni royal 225/45/17 yesterday again for this year, €105 a corner but worth it. Last set got me 13 months, so was happy with that on the Quattro.
Always get good tyres, They can save your life.
