This is probably a long shot (really no pun intended) but I was watching a PGA competition a few weeks back and they did a FO view of a player teeing off a par three. Anyway the slow-mo showed him setting up with his hands practically in line with the ball and it was only in the split second before commencing his back swing that he moved his hands forward. Like I said its a long shot but it's an unusual style and thought it might ring a bell with someone.

    Any help appreciated.

What was unusual about it MyKeyG?
Was it that he made a sudden movement forward with his hands before his started his backswing?

Not 100% sure if that's what you are describing above.

OK have a look at this image http://perfectgolfswingreview.net/LeadbetterHundred-stance.jpg
Forget the driver stance and ball position. Let's say the middle stance is actually also a 9 Iron. The golfer in question starts his short irons as if he's holding the 5 iron in the middle image, in line with or almost behind the ball, but at the last second before he begins his backswing he flicks his hands ahead of the ball to position three. The reason they did a slo-mo of it was precisely to point out that it was an unusual quirke.

Loads of pros do it (Els for example) it's just a trigger to start the back swing

If I'm reading you right it sounds a lot like Henrik Stenson.

It's called a Forward Press. Google 'Golf Forward Press'

    Actually you might be right.

I know a lot of pro's do it as a trigger, but this was particularly noticeable (in slow motion). The event commentators made a particular point of it. I just have to see if I can hunt down some Henrik Stenson videos and load them onto the V1 app.

Just saw this reply. I've never heard of it but you're spot on. There are some videos on YT which is what I was after really so that's a huge help. Thanks guys.

Anybody on here do it as a matter of interest?

When much younger I used to use forward press on my putting (a la Player) but not any more. Now I'm trying to reduce the number of moving parts.
Hogan talks about the forward press breaking the inertia of the stance/set up to help your take away in a smooth manner. Other players used knee movement and I think Nicklaus used to tilt his chin to the right just before initiating the start of the swing.

    Used to do it.

Was never even aware I was doing it until a mate pointed out that I had a nice "trigger" to initiate my swing.

Have stopped doing it in recent times as I was finding it was leading to a bit of sway in my swing (I'd probably gotten into more of a lean than a press)

Again just curiosity but have you ever tried not doing it? The reason I started this thread is because it makes my swing feel more natural but a lot of coaches are against it because it inclines your body weight forward first.

Tall or short golfer? Thomas aiken has a very pronounced one alright just right before his takeaway

It's a tension thing, and a trigger, loads of tour players do it with the putter too.

Dunfner moves the whole club forward toward target slightly, then starts the backswing dragging it, so the clubhead is ahead of the butt on the target side, and gives him a flowing one piece takeaway, and keeps him from taking it back on the inside.

Some players use a knee kick, others do different things, it isn't important only to the person doing it.

As strange as it sounds, some players get the baclswing yips and can't do it smoothly, triggers are a way of ingraining the brain and body to commit fully to the swing without jerky tension

its a natural move to me, hands forwards then once piece back.

I always play with my weight on my forward foot now, so thats not an issue for me :)
But prior to that, it was never really an issue, you should be able to move your hands an inch forward and it not impact your weight distro
