Mechanical Keyboard for work

    Hey all!

Been awhile since I've posted in here.

I'm currently flirting with the idea of buying a Mechanical keyboard for work. I'm a programmer so I spend 8 hours sitting at my desk typing, perfect situation for mech keyboard really, some might even give out to me for not having one already. Currently I have a provided generic HP €5 keyboard.

The problem is I work in an open plan office
I have 50+ people sitting within ear range of a mech keyboard hammering away, including managers etc...
So my obvious switch type is Browns. However I've no experience with them at all so I don't know how loud they actually are or if they would be appropriate for work.

My idea of a perfect keyboard is the Corsair K70!

Features that are important to me,
    • Subtle design
    • Backlighting (not really for work)
    • Media keys
    • No fancy gamer features I won't use (macros, etc)

    So question time :-)
    • Are Browns quiet enough for an open plan office?
    • Does anyone have experience with the Corsair K70? Is it good?
    • Is there any other similar mech keyboards I should consider?
    • O-Rings, where to get them? Which type do I need? Do they work?

    Thanks for reading.

Browns will be louder than your average membrane keyboard. A good chunk of the noise comes from bottoming out the keys though, rather than the switches themselves. If you're the type not to type heavily enough to bottom out, then you should be alright. If not, o-rings will definitely help with this.

I really like the K70 as well. I'd have bought a Blue K70 already if it wasn't for Corsair's MX RGB announcement (I want white LEDs). If you're around Rathfarnham, or DIT, I can bring my keyboard along for you to have a play around with if you like (QPad MK-80, Browns).

Oh, and most keyboard sites will sell o-rings. WASD Keyboards, QWER Keys, etc. Alternatively, Amazon should sell them too. As for specifics, I haven't a clue, as I don't use them.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in the Midlands and I don't be around Dublin much at all. I actually have the blues version of the Mk80 at home.

Regarding the o rings, thanks for the info, I'll try source some online for cheap, I think they will be a necessity for the office. I'm hoping they will make the noise difference almost unnoticeable.
It seems QWERkeys don't actually sell them and it's not cheap shipping them from WASD so hopefully I can find some at a reasonable price.

Believe it or not I have those in my amazon basket but with shipping to Ireland they come out at over £20, for a few small rubber rings . That's almost 20% of the cost of the keyboard

I'm finding it hard to believe that's the going price for them.

If there's free shipping within the uk use parcel motel and get it delivered to the north for €3.50

Unfortunately the shipping is £6 in the UK.
I found some cheap O-Rings on ebay from China, they were only €4 but hopefully they will do the job :-)
