If you have seen the video circulating the news of a confrontation between ukrainian and Russian troops blocking a road, warning shots are fired and erratic negotiations take place. However I can not make heads nor tails of a flag a Ukrainian soldier is carrying, one has a flag of Ukraine which is easily visible but to his right another soldier is carrying a red flag with a socialist star and hammer and sickle on its inverse, this surely makes absolutely no sense, are they attempting to be ironic?

They were (i believe) carrying a Russian flag to show brotherly solidarity with the Russian soldiers. Kinda saying "hey we are just like you and don't have beef with you"

The red flag was believed to be a reminder that Ukrainian soldiers fought alongside Russians to defeat the nazis in world war 2. Not a wardrobe malfunction but a deliberate reminder of the past

"We will fight to defend our country" says yer man on the News in his Nylon hat. A gun might be handy tho...could be a quick fight. Bit one-sided looking. Russian Spetznaz versus kids in cheap uniforms munching biscuits. I think this might be a "battle" settled at a big table, otherwise, without outside help (and that's sort of us....) this can't end well.

It seems that the red flag is a regimental flag.

In the Soviet Army each regiment had a flag with a gold hammer/sickle on one side and a star on the reverse.

The regimental number and name appeared under the star.

"For our Soviet Motherland" appeared under the hammer/sickle.

But why would a Ukrainian regiment supposedly espousing Ukrainian freedom carry such a flag. I don't know maybe they havent updated it in 20+ years hahahahahaha

I figured it was a historic regimental banner.

they still use it for ceremonial purposes , every day ( or week ? ) , the Finnish air force do a parade from one point in Helsinki to their barracks , headed with a blue flag the incorporates the swastika in it.

they use it long before the Nazis did

A bunch of unarmed "tech support" soldiers walk towards Russian special forces and demand that they feck off home.

Whoever has the bowls to do that can wear a pink tutu for all I care. I'll salute him.
