Just out of interest, for those of you who don't mind answering, how much did you start out with investing? Did it go a long way?

€1000 about 6 years ago. It's now €4500. When I have some spare money I might throw in another Grand but I'm definitely patient.

That's what I call patient! what stockbroker are you using? I'm using Davy online but if I want to make a small trade it's 15e. So I'd appreciate learning from you.

If you don't mind saying, whats the biggest and smallest the pot has been over the years? Or has it been growing steady?

Started off with 1000 but I only really play with Penny stocks. Its a learning exercise for me which means that while I obviously want my stocks to go up if they all took a serious dive tomorrow then I wouldn't be out that much.

Yes, my account has been running for a little over 18 months now. Made a lot of gains (Bank of Ireland, Glanbia, and Nokia) but lost my ring on an Oil exploration stock (Chariot Oil and Gas).

I think if you want to learn its best to have some skin in the game but not so much that it would hurt you if you lost it all.

Started off with 550 dragon oil at €1.59 in april 2008. I have been in profit since day 1. Once they started issuing them I reinvested dividends, first in Petroneft, then inm. I am a fan of penny stocks. Cashed in the INM at 15 cents and topped up Petroneft.

Dragon is stagnating for the last year but as i said I am patient and I see good long term prospects in both these stocks.

Don't have a lot of spare money to invest ( probably luckily for me). I watch and listen and I don't believe the hype. I did study business and marketing which I believe has helped. Goodbody is my broker but my dividends have covered my transaction fees so I haven't bothered shopping around. If I was making more trades I would.

Static me. I don't get it. Your cost of trading? How on earth can you buy shares total 1000 euro...? Can you explain? What broker - online or otherwise?

I have bought shares totalling less than 1000 euro on Td Ameritrade. It's ten dollars to buy and ten to sell.

Goverement saving scheme remember that. Full whack in stocks. Maybe about 200 over what I would have in a fixed interest account. Minimal profit year 1 and 2. Modest profit year 3 loss year 4 and 5.

Started with €25 and now it's €631.82 and I mainly stuck with commodities particularly, Natural Gas and Oil

    Hi Thronegames,

Yes, exactly as FudgeBrownie mentioned. I setup an account on TDDirect logged 1000 euro and then just traded. Its 10-15 a trade so you can make some small trades buy\sell but as each trade is already costing you €15 before you make anything back I obviously don't trade that often.

Hope that is what you're looking for? If not i'm happy to answer explain more in detail.

Well done both of you quoted above. I just think €15 a pop is a high percentage of ypur stake. Was just wondering if you were using CFD site where you leverage. That's what I'm looking at now. My gut and basic analysis tells me I should short one stock. Having read the charter I'm reluctant to say which one!

I've been keeping a close eye on Natural Gas a lot. It goes up and back down. I buy when it's going up and sell it once it's going down considerably. Once going down, I'd short it. I don't hold onto these for a long time (1-2 days)

What online broker you using to trade? I see exploration oversold and I'd love to get into a short position on some Irish stocks.

I'm using Plus500. Doesn't have a lot of Irish stocks available, think it's 7 only. I used it as a training platform by using the demo account. Gave me 50000 to start off and a couple of months later, I had 84-85k. At that point, I decided to take advantage of the offer Plus500 had, go Real Money account and get €25 for free. Went ahead with it and the day before, my class had a big discussion on stock trading (I'm still a student) and my teacher recommended to look into gas. Did my research and kept an eye on it until it hit low and that's when I bought it and held on to it until it started to drop down.

Do you mind if I ask how long did it take, do I assume it's mostly AIM you trade?

Yes, it's a high percentage but because I don't trade that often I don't mind it. I've lost a lot more making foolish mistakes, if I'm honest, and not doing my homework on a stock.

I wouldn't \ haven't done any CFD stuff because I don't really know what I'm doing right now, within reason, so I don't want to trade with high multiples even using stop/loss features. Its too risky for me. Honestly, when I go through Wexboy's blog and argue the fundamentals then I'll consider getting fancy with my trades. For now I'm in it just for the learning aspect.

I started using it since mid-November and I've been using it since then. That's about 5 months

Started about 40 years ago with a few old pounds in the post office. That few pounds is still going strong having been through deposits, bonds, stocks etc.

Got stung a few times, especially with the Irish Banks, down but not out. That experience pushed me into looking further afield and have been into large cap multinationals since.

Online account with relatively low costs means you don't have to have huge money to be involved. That's the real big change over the years. But it is still a long game. No huge quick profits. Pick good quality large multinationals which pay a good dividend. Re-invest the divi in more shares. In time this produces a good return.

I hope its okay if I ask here:

I saw that someone started with only 25Euro, so lets say to start with only 200-500 Euro is not too low?

Starting to get into it and try to learn as much as I can

If you're willing to use that to make profit then maybe spread-betting is the way? Dunno; looking at that myself! I'm using Davy Select online but it's 15 e per trade + 1% stamp duty if you buy Irish stocks. Also I'm in the market for much larger trades. You need to know what you're doing with spread betting . I don't. Hope someone else can help you? It's difficult. I remember seeing Bank of Ireland shares at 5c and thinking of getting a loan to buy but I had no money and no real confidence. Also family commitments. Ther downside 5 years ago was that BOI would simply follow Anglo down the drain. Late last year I started to get back into the market. Dip in. dip out etc. Best of luck. Be careful.

Well I put down a 500 euro trade two weeks ago and made 140 euro in a couple of days. But I went for high risk, deliberately.

It depends. Do you want long term, low risk investment? Or, short term high risk? Low risk generally equals less return, high risk equals higher returns.

If you want low risk and long term, then I recommend banking that cash, saving up more money, and using a paper/practice account.

If you want to do high risk, then still bank it and use paper account, but trade with that amount.

Regardless, invest what you are able to lose. I personally saved up what I would have thought was a large amount for me. I lost a bit, then I made some. But each time I made an investment or short term trade I would learn from what I did. I personally dislike spread betting and forex, although I have had a practice spreadbetting account and played with forex for about a year and a bit.

All I will say is, from my own experience and perspective, learn a style of investing/trading, practice it, then stick to it. Well, until you learn more and develop a style.

I downloaded this and was playing around with the demo version. It doesn't seem to have all stocks on there, i.e., I tried looking for a few companies I know and didn't see them and did not see a place to add stocks, is this because its the Demo version or can you not add stocks in your portfolio even in the full version? Cheers.

i used this before and found you can only make money by trading eur/usd and oil or major indices as the commisions on anything like coffee/stocks/etfs/ are so bad they can be up to 40% of total position. Basically anything exotic or popular with and opportunity for gain is going to be to expensive to buy or sell. looking for a better setup at the moment any adivce would be appreciated.
