Does online advertising work on you?

With the huge valuations of so many web and app startups (whos only product is yet more ad delivery mechanisms) I was wondering do online ads work on you the good people of AH?

I don't think they do me. For starters I have ABP :) And any app based ads are completely ignored, how long do they get on screen in a standard game of Flappy Birds!

Don't know. Lots of ads work subliminally.

The more something is advertised, the more i will avoid it. Ie, everyone sees the same ad's on tv for insurance quotes etc. I would rather pay more than ever use them. Same with net ad's.

If i want something, i will do a search and make up my own mind based on the facts,

Don't know. Lots of ads work subliminally.

And that is the best answer you going to get all night OP.

Nobody knows whether it works. One cannot measure the effects of subliminal advertising accurately.

Those people who say "oh, it never works on me" might not be fully cognisant of the powerful effects of subliminal advertising has on them.

I wonder has anyone ever actually said "Yeh those ads worked on me subliminally" though. That's the whole point: you don't realise it.

You think this, but you can't really know that advertising has never worked on you.

I think it is strange people never followed a link advert on a website. They are often relevant stuff you looked up before so normally advertising something you are interested in.

Ads before a video seem completely pointless and just irritating as they aren't relevant to me and are repeated so often.

It seems to do this one weird trick on me that I can't quite pinpoint, despite medical intervention. Doctors HATE it.

I honestly can't fathom how Facebook makes ad revenue. The only advertising that the regular Joe actually "likes" are for local bars/ restaurants/ hotels that set their page up for free. And the only reason people "like" them is that they get to hear about big nights or discounts at a business they have already been frequenting long before Facebook came about. Any "suggested pages" corporate business links goes right in the spam filter for me. The fact that I have never seen a "suggested page" that even mildly tweaked my interest shows what a failure all these apparent FB algorithms that deduce your tastes are.

If it's something I'm interested in, i'd consider it. Sometimes I'd even buy it. But not something that's being advertised out the blue that I'd have no interest in.

Right now there's a banner trying to sell me cloud computing. I'm not going to follow that through to buy myself some.

Google ads work a lot more than random tv/radio ads

If I get a google ad on my screen, it's probably because I have been searching for that kind of thing recently.

I'm the kind of person who does a lot of research before I buy something, so it's actually useful to see ads for products that I'm actively interested in buying so I'll happily click them.
