I think it was mentioned here previously but think its worth another mention as the end of indoor season looms.

These guys have been doing some pretty good work with regards generating funds and with all the talk about government funding I think this provides a genuine short term solution to the major issue. There has been some success with regards the likes of getting streaming for the Intervarsities.

There will be those who argue that funding out of our pockets does not solve the major issue but I think the format does offer some benefits which are not seen from Government funding.

Many of the donations come with stipulations i.e pledge x and get a motivational talk or training session. I think these is a great feature as not only are the donations helping support the athletes but it also offers learning opportunities for clubs/school teams as well as generating exposure of these athletes in the club/ school environment.

I have heard it commented in the past at the lack of PR work done from some funded athletes where they simply get the funding and focus on their own training. Personally I think this creates an extra pressure on the athletes as the judgement of value for money with regard funding is solely based on their performance irregardless of injury situation etc. This sort of "giving back to the community" aspect means that despite funding an athlete at high performance level there is a knock on effect on grass routes level as well as media exposure.

There is also the possibility of using this to generate money for other aspects (facilities as the example with AIT/Craughwell) but also possibly as a way to generate finance needed to put on regualr international meets as well as assembling high calibre fields across the board

(Apologies for the long winded speech but I think this is a great initiative and I would hate to see it fall off after initial success)
