    Hi

Just looking at this section brings back the memories of my childhood:) Used to love wargames and monopoly.

I'd like get my 7year old a boardgame that I can play with him - He loves lego and is pretty good at maths(if this is relevant - I don't know if there is a Lego board game that involves sums:D)

I'm based in Meath / Cavan so any shops nearby would be good too.

    Anyway - thanks in advance

    Jinky

I'd recommend Castle Panic as it's cooperative so you get to work together to fight off beasties attacking your castle.

Also, you can't go wrong with Ticket to Ride. It's fairly straightforward rules-wise. You can choose whether or not to mess up someone else's routes, which is important if you are playing with younger players who may not be able to avoid freaking out if things go against them.

There is a Monopoly card game called Monopoly Deal which I have seen in lots of places (supermarkets, big toy stores, etc.) which is very good. Orders of magnitude better than the game it's based on and it only takes 15 minutes to play.

The first two would be available in specialist game shops, but there are a few websites that sell them online in Ireland that do not charge crazy postage if you are unable to get to a bricks and mortar store.

Africana isn't as good as ticket to ride, although mechanically simpler.

I think Rampage is great for kids (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asmodee-Rampage-Boardgame/dp/B00GXZURZY/ref=sr_1_1?s=kids&ie=UTF8&qid=1393966107&sr=1-1&keywords=rampage)

I'll second Castle Panic. Easy to pick up, great for kids and adults.

Thanks for the suggestions - think I'll go castle panic.

I'm heading up north (Enniskillen) this saturday - any places up there that might stock a good selection of boardgames?

    Thanks

Nowhere near Enniskillen but Replay in Bangor is the best game shop I'm aware of in the north.

    Couple of quick suggestions

    Quick Games
    -Dobble
    -Zombie Dice
-Ribbit (this is fantastic), the polish version is easier to get it's called Pedzace Zolwie and is language independent

Slightly longer more complex games (remember you can slowly introduce some of the rules in this as more games of it are played)
-Catan - start with the basic rules and leave out the thief
-Carcassonne - Leave out the farmer rule to start with
    -Roll through the ages
    -Formula D

    Bigger games
-Zombicide (bit blood and guts but great fun)
    -Descent
    -Heroquest
    -Pirates Cove

I find kids prefer certainly to start with games that you play together against the game itself, no harm to adjust the rules a little to favour the child so they don't get frustrated straight off IMHO

Some great gaming available in the north of Ireland, have a google for theWeeGamers, really nice bunch of guys.

I run Knavecon in Limerick, it's a family friendly gaming convention, we get a good bunch of younger players that take part in the early part of the day. If you're down this way next September it's well worth a visit (kids are free)

Tsuro is fantastically simple, and is really as challenging as you want to play it. Great for all ages, and allows up to 8 players at once, so it's a nice family game.

Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert are great, simple but interesting co-op games. You set the difficulty level to suit yourself, so it'll scale up as you get better and fancy a challenge. It's also available at bargain prices (I picked Forbidden Island up on Amazon for just shy of €15, including delivery, a few months back). Definitely worth trying.

+1 on Zombie Dice, too. Great craic. Really simple, but always gets laughs and calls for "just one more round". Arguably the most played game in this house.

I've heard Mice & Mystics can be great fun for kids.

Just added on the Zombie Dice 2: Double Feature add-on dice, can make it more interesting if you're getting bored of the standard game!

Did the same myself. The extra rules are nice (heroes saving each other), but even without them, they're a lively addition to it.
