I have been wearing glasses for 5 years now and i would like to start wearing contact lenses. I know i have to make an appointment with an optician first to have my eyes checked as i know my eyesight has gotten worse since i got my glasses but can anyone tell me how much it costs for the eye exam, consultation with optician re contact lenses and finally buying the lenses. I'm really looking for a ball park figure before i commit to making the appointment.

About 30 euro for the fitting, some places will also charge for eye exam separately too, so a other 20 top.

Thanks for that, that doesn't sound too bad. I really hate wearing glasses and i'm used to putting make up on and fiddling with my eyes so putting contacts in shouldn't be too hard. I will make that appointment asap.

That should Include a trial of the lenses they are fitting you with, all your teaches where they show you how to insert and remove your lenses and your final check up.

I've been with Specsavers for 8 or 9 years and when I went in last year to ask about contacts they gave me the exam and fitting free of charge, I only ended up having to pay for a month's supply of lenses.

Well i had my contact fitting exam on Saturday and it was a complete disaster. The optician put them in first and i have to say it didn't feel weird, i cud see lol but when it came to taking them out i just couldn't do it. Has anyone a special technique for taking them out, the guy showing me just kept saying 'you're moving them but you have to pinch them'. I still couldn't do it, so i'm going back later today for a second try but i'm not confident about it at all. I suppose there are some people that just cant get the hang of contacts. The optical assistant came over to take them out and he had them out in a second. I know it takes time but i just don't think i'll get it :(

You're not alone! When I had them fitted I sat there like a fool poking my eyes for god knows how long. I ended up not really getting it until I'd done it at home a few times. It's unsettling at first but you really just have to go for it and essentially pinch your eye with a fair bit of force to make sure you really grab the lense.

Thanks for that. I went back yesterday and i have to say i fared much better, i was able to put them in (only took 40 mins lol) and take them out twice so they were happy with me. The guy in Specsavers i saw yesterday was lovely, he was patient with me and praised me when i actually got them in, high five and all :)
So now i know i can put them in and take them out, it will take time but i realise i can do it. The only thing now is my distance vision is perfect but my near vision is failing  The joys of getting old!

There are lots of people who have 'trouble' using contact lenses initially. I'm one of them! The first time or 2, I had no problem, and got them in and out quite easily. It was only after about a week that I had problems taking them out at home. I literally spent an hour trying to get them out, and I just couldn't. I actually took to google to search for different methods for removing contacts. It turns out that the method I'd been shown just didn't work for me and once I tried the other method, i managed it in less than a minute and haven't looked back since. When I went back for my 5 day check up, I told the girl I'd changed the method suggested, and she said it was absolutely fine, and that I wasn't the only one who adopted a different method to what I'd been shown! Hope they work out for you! :)

It will take you a while to get used to them. It'll be irritating and very annoying when you can't get them in (this will happen). Stick with it, practice really does make perfect. I don't need a mirror to get them in or out now, It is second nature. I'd imagine others are the same?

Also, many opticians are quite dear for lenses. I'd suggest once you know which type of lenses suits your eye. Then use daysoft to buy them online. I would have no hesitation in reccomending them to anyone.

    Good Luck

Hey, thanks for that, i've been wearing them nearly a week now and still have problems putting them in, it takes about 15-20 mins every day just to get one in, once the first one is in the second seems easier for some reason. I was shown a different way of taking them out also but now i pull them down before i pinch them out and i can take them out now no problem. I realise it will be a while before i can put them in first go but i'm so happy with them, they don't feel awkward, the only thing is my eyes get more tired than usual but that's common.
Thanks for all replies guys :)
