    Guys,

I have a 98 petrol corrolla (I know) that's due a timing belt change, however I've been hearing a knocking sound the last two days from the back, intermittent usually rough ground, I think (Google thinks) may be a CV joint, I'm waiting for mechanic to call me this afternoon to when can fit me in to check anyway, but how much am I looking roughly?

It's more than likely worn rear anti roll bar bushes. A cheap and easy fix.

    Here's a link - http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=1331204

Fitting is an easy diy job.

If you still intend to have the car in 2 or 3 years time, I would suggest getting the proper Toyota ones. Some of the spurious ones don't seem to last too long. The rubber boots perish and grit gets into the joint itself.

    Sounds like a fair price.

I wish I was posting with happy news however I picked up the car this evening, drove out the garage, on the home what do I hear? The knocking sound. Again.

Rang mechanic, he tells me to bring it back in the morning but he replaced the drop links and bushes and that should have been the cause.

Now I'm actually beginning to wonder if replaced the two belts and the timing belt at all, I check. I can see the two belts are fitted but I can't see the timing belt obviously.

And I have no clue how to tell if he actually did the links and bushes.

    Entirely pissed off.

The drop links and to a lesser extent the bushings will be easily visible if you look at the rear suspension.

It is possible that a ball joint or the top shock mount is gone. Mechanic should be well able to identify this.

I'd say he probably fitted the links and bushings alright. If you know what to look for it will be very easy to see if they have been replaced.

When does this noise happen? Do you have to go over a rough patch of ground or does it only happen when your turning? Also are you sure it's from the back?

The only other thing I can think of that would cause knocking at the rear is the shock absorbers.

Just got under the car now and can see the new drop links alright. How much am I talking about its a shock?

On rough ground at low speed I can hear the knocking, it's intermittent, over bumps but not every bump, I notice it more on turning but I'm not sure if that's just because I'm going slower around the bend

Might seem obvious, but make sure your heat shield around the exhaust isn't bent. I had this problem before, knocking on rough roads. and found the heat shield was bent, and the rocking exhaust was banging off it.
