5 Series yay or nae

Thinking of selling my 04 3 Series Coupe (only 65k on the clock soshouldn't be too hard to sell).

With the money from that and a few k more I was thinking of of trading up to a 5 Series. I probably wouldn't get up to a post July 2008 diesel so I'd say it would be an 06 / 07 520d. An MSport would be preferable.

I'm a 27 yo guy. Am I mad to go for a 5 Series or would people recommend it?

If not would you recommend anything else around the €11kish mark? You can probably imagine what I'd be interested in with what I currently have and what I'm thinking about buying.

    Thanks!

Nothing wrong with a 5er for a 27 year old imo. Just go for the M47 engine version, much more reliable than the later N47 engine. You also need to test drive the SE and M Sport as a lot of people find the M Sport suspension too hard.

Something like this is what I would be looking at:

Or if you are doing small mines then consider a similar 523i/525i.

I'm 25 with a 530d and loving it. Always get asked what do I need it for but to hell with them I Like it so what matter.
If you like them you don't need to know anybody else's opinion.

they are quite different cars, do you want to move away from a coupe?

I've a 5er in my 20's. I can't complain but realistically. I don't need the space and it makes me appear far too old at times. It's not exactly a boring saloon car on the contrary it's probably the only exciting one out there bar a Maserati or an AMG/M car.

    €11k buy an 06/07 3er coupe

problem is, your not going to spend that on an E46 coupe and the E92 are for that money here are either ****ty SE's (the E92 looks awful IMO) or 4 pots or both!!! Hence I am keeping my E46 325ci much longer than anticipated, getting a nice E92 6 pot m sport even from the uk, you are looking at 16-17k, there is no middle ground unfortunately... Is it a petrol or diesel you are after op?

    I had a 535d msport '06 when I was 26.. no reason you can't have a 5'er in your twenties!

Any 2008 car will get the lower tax, not just july onwards.

Thats nice. not mad on the M5 wheels though. also, didnt think the LCI interior/exterior appeared until mid 2007 with the LCI engine appearing in September 2007.

Is it a genuine LCI or retrofitted?

Yeah seems like a lot of effort and expensive to retrofit LCI bits. Seats are also LCI. LCI appeared in March 2007 afaik.

I'm 26 and my e60 was cheaper to insure than my old e90.
The e60 is a heavy car that needs a 6 pot. The extra tax is worth it!

I'm younger than you and just picked up an 08 c220 Avantgarde sport. Serious machine. I was going for a 5 series until someone on boards casually said to look at the c class

    Best. Decision. Ever.

It was also cheaper to insure than my 02 320d... Go figure

OP you mention that you have low miles on the 3er. If your doing low mileage a diesel may not be the best idea for you. I'd imagine you'd get a better deal on a a 320i also

you would probably bring in the below for about 11k...

Speak of the devil, just to back up the point I made yesterday! Get ready to lose 2-3 grand a year for the first 2-3 years to save a E300 a year on "da cheap tax"
