I'm moving to JB in June for 18 months. I was wondering if anyone has any experience of living or even visiting.

I'll want to visit Singapore on a regular basis, specifically Sentosa Island. How long does it take to get there from downtown JB over the causeway during non peak hours (after 8pm say)?
How easy is it to pass between the two? Would I need a Visa for SG?

    Thanks!

I live in Singapore and have been over and back to JB a few times.
It will take you about 1.5 -2 hours to get from JB to Sentosa. Queues into and out of Woodlands checkpoints at the weekends are long and it may take even longer than that depending on crowds and how well immigration is staffed.
Advice would be to leave your house in JB ridiculously early to beat the queues.

I'd be travelling between 9pm and midnight more than likely by bus.

Would I do it in less than an hour?

Are you going to work at Legoland? That's in JB.

    !

I know Singapore pretty well. Been there many times for business trips of a week or so each time.

Once I accidently missed a flight from Oz to KL... so instead took a flight to Singapore, taxi to Woodlands to cross the border in KL... and then another 4 hour taxi around midnight up to KL. It was a crazy experience as the Malaysian taxi driver was a nutjob. Drove the whole way to KL with his seat full reclined, foot to the floor and face to the steering wheel.

    Anyway... I digress...

Are you targetting Sentosa because you heard it is touristy?... or because you'll have to work there? There are many other great places in Singapore. Sentosa is artificial. Not my fav. place by far. Once you've wandered around there once, visited Tanjong Beach Club, taken the cable car from Mount Faber, etc you will have seen most of it.

Hey, no won't be working at Legoland. I'll be working for a large company in the Zurich building in downtown JB.

The reason for Sentosa island is that iFly Singapore is there and I'll be taking out a membership.

I'll be visiting SG for other things but not as regularly as this.

    Ok cool.

I walked by I-Fly once and thought about it. Was booked out and didn't bother waiting around.

If you are interested in history I'd recommend reading up on the fall Singapore during WW2 when the Japanese invaded. They came down the Malaysian peninsula on bikes, over the causeway and into Singapore.

Having the knowledge of where the various battles, strongholds, atrocities, etc occured will make it more poigiant for you as you travel around Malaysia and particularly Singapore.

In Malaysia you could take a trip to the Cameron Highlands (about 1 hour or so from KL in a taxi if I rememeber correctly). Get the gondola lift up the mountainside. Great views. Theme park at the top and a casino/hotel.

You can also take a trip to Malacca from JB. Not too far.

18 months sounds like a good amount of time to explore both SG and Malaysia. Once you cover off the major attractions you can start making trips further into Asia via cheap flights from SG or KL. Enjoy!
