Little bit of background, I'm 25 now, been working in the same place since I was 18. Right up until the past couple of weeks, I've always worked a full week; there were a couple of 4 day weeks here and there, but on the whole I got between 30-35 hours on a regular basis.
However, head office have cut everyone's hours drastically. Last week, I did 23, this week I'm doing 21. I don't know what next week is like yet.
I was talking to a friend and she said something to me along the lines of it being possible for me to claim the lost hours on the dole. I'm honestly confused at this, since I thought the dole is for people who don't have a job, so that they can have some sort of a liveable income.
I'm on 13.59/hour, so that means that this week, I'd be coming out with 285 euro gross. I'm still able to make rent and feed myself, and still have a bit of money left over.
Can anyone confirm or deny what it is my friend told me?

you can work 3 days max and sign on for the other days,

Nuts. The two weeks that have so far been bad have been 4 day weeks. This of course means that some of the days are ****ty 4 hour shifts. So basically, from what you're telling me, I'd have to convince the boss to lump what hours I'm getting into 3 days and then claim the rest.

What does your contract of employment state?

I think it has to be 3 days, the idea being that u are available for work the other days which the social are paying you for. I was put on 3 day wk and claimed for other days, you need a letter from your employer to state they changed you from 5 to 3 days. I remember with my claim I had the letter and they still rang my boss and spoke to him and asked if it was my decision to work part time, even though the letter clearly stated they reduced the days. My boss then had to email the person aswell to confirm. Never claimed anything before and then they make u jump through hoops!

Just my 2 cents on this but my calculations could be wrong (it's early) but based on the information you gave, I don't think it would be worth your while claiming based on the following:

You're 25 now, new claimants rate for would be €144 until you turn 26.

If your had all 21 hours last week clumped together into 3 days that would be €285 means for the week which is means of €95 per day. The DSP deduct €20 per day and get 60% of the balance as your means so that would be €95 - €20 = €75*60% = €45 so if I'm correct that means they will deduct €45 for every day that you work leaving you with €144 (basic rate) - €45*3 days = €9.

I'd wait until you turn 26, then you'd qualify for the €188 rate and that would work out at around €53 a week for you, otherwise to me all that hassle and it is hassle with dockets and everything is not sufficient effort to gain €9 a week.

If the OP has been working full time for the last 5 years then they should qualify for full rate jobseekers benefit €188 pw. and every day they work approx €33 will be taken off this payment letting them with a payment of €89 approx from sw plus €285 from work.

claiming the dole as a casual worker is possible but you would have to be only working a few days a week like 2 or 3 then the social welfare will pay u the rest of the week but if your working everyday for a few hours they wont
