With the festival only a few days away I was just wondering what your biggest wins at the festival, biggest priced winner and your favourite Cheltenham Moments:

The biggest winner I ever had was Big Bucks in his first World Hurdle win remember lumping a good chunk off my Thursday pay packet on that and not even getting to see the race, one of the guys knew i'd a goo wedge on it and came in and told me Punchestowns romped home, needless to say my face dropped and he broke out laughing! When he told me the result i wanted to kiss him but then kill him :D

The biggest priced winner I ever had was Bertie's Dream at 40/1 but it was also the most sickening moment in my Cheltenham experience as I had also backed Thousand Stars at 33/1 and wrote both of them on the one docket and didnt do an each way double just singles. The single wins softened the blow a little I suppose. Honorable mentions for Amicelli and Chief Dan George 33/1 winners :D

My best Cheltenham moment is a toughie but just always had a soft spot for Master Minded and the way he won the Queen Mother the first time jumping was unbelievable and he just had me in awe of him that day, absolutely awesome. Many moments but that just sticks out for some mad reason

Ha first two are the same for me except twas Big Bucks vs Grand Crus 2011..

Best moment was probably Activial winning the triumph at a canter in 2014.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,474 ✭✭✭longshotvalue

Biggest Price winner was Oiseau de nuit at 50/1 in the Grand Annual a few years ago. I had some fairly silly confidence about him and he was on the first of my 100 bets treads here for 2pts EW.. Myself and my brother were the only ones cheering him home.. And i mean the only ones..

I don't gamble big but i had my biggest bet ever on Moscow Flyer when he won his 2nd Champion Chase. I was playing online poker at the time and used a bit of my bankroll.. (ohh to have that money tree back:()

Best moment ever was the roar that greeted the supreme first time i ever went about 7-8 years ago.

The biggest winner I ever had was definitely backing Berties Dream 33/1 and Pigeon Island 28/1 (small Rule 4) in an each way double to win the Albert Bartlett and Grand Annual respectively on the final day of the 2010 Festival. Had been an absolutely torrid festival the first 3 days but was up an utter fortune after that.

The biggest price winner I ever had was Son Of Flicka when I napped him to win the 2012 Coral Cup at 40/1. I had a right good go given how potentially well handicapped he was on his 2nd to Sir Des Champs off a 5lb higher mark in the Martin Pipe the year before and Donald McCain had indeed truly cheated his way to victory.

My Best Cheltenham moment is probably watching Hardy Eustace win the 2004 Champion Hurdle. My mom had gotten a tip that there was absolutely no way he would be out of the first 3 and she stuck a very sizeable each way bet on him. I was under the legal betting age at the time so only had a 5er on but was absolutely delighted when he stormed home and his victory is probably what cemented my love affair with racing.

Biggest priced winner was Joes Edge nabbing a three way photo finish with Davy Russell aboard at 50/1 in 07.

Biggest win well I'd say there was a lot of people on here sick of hearing me spouting on about Our Conor all last year. I was in Navan the first day he won and my god he took my breath away that day that I just knew then there was only going to be 1 outcome of the 2013 triumph. I think I drove SRFC mad telling him he would walk all over Diakali. Needless to say we all know what he did after. Had him backed from everything from 16/1 to 9/2 that I took on the day. It would have been a depressing week if he had of lost that's for sure.

Best Cheltenham moment until last year I would have said Denman. His victory was unreal I remember watching it in a bookies being 1 of the only people in there cheating on the tank it was immense stuff.
But last year bet or not Our Conor's Triumph success I can't think of that race without getting chills down spine I have never seen a horse do that in a Grade 1 around Cheltenham in 15 years watching racing. It was ridiculous!

Why am I not suprised this one popped up on this forum, think that was the beginning for King Rossom :D

I was waiting on Boston Bob in the Albert Bartlett a couple of years ago for a complete fortune. It was just over £8k and that is a fortune to me :). It was an incredible sweat, we all know what happened :(

I've never really hit big at Cheltenham, hoping that changes this year.

biggest win was a fiver treble on noland, voy por ustedes and brave inca on day 1 of 2006 meeting, just over an hour and i was up for the festival

my favourite bet was backing See More Business in 1999, he was taken out early in 1998 and having backed Florida Pearl I thought it was only a matter of collecting as See More Business was the big danger and favourite, of course The Pearl didnt win, so despite some ordinary runs the following year i though the 33's about See More Business was great value - took bits and pieces down to 14/1 and was well paid off

that 33/1 ante post was my biggest winner too

Worst momment was giving a girl at work a tip...wrote four of them down on a post it thinking she would do singles , she hadnt a clue put a fourfold down which came in at 800/1 ...I didnt do the bet !!

Biggest win:2012 festival had Teaforthree done twice, Son of Flicka and Cape Tribulation.

Big Priced Winner: Son of Flicka I'd say.

Best Moment: Newmill 2006 Champion Chase.

Biggest win was either Inglis Drever in the 2007 stayers or Albertas Run in the 2010 Ryanair.

Have had plenty of double figure prices win for me but off the top of my head Albertas Run is the biggest I can think of now at 25/1. Hopefully Last Instalment can top that this year :pac:

Biggest disappointment was Newmill running in the 2006 champion chase instead of the Grand Annual off 134 (I think). I was poised to have one of my biggest ever bets. The rest is history & I'd not so much as a penny on him for the Champion Chase.

    Biggest win: Gaspara 2007.

Biggest priced winner: Belvano at 41 on Betfair.

    Best Moment: Gaspara 2007.

mcoys last three treble won me a few hundred for 4/5 quid at the time
blowing wind edredon b (not sure the other one..cyfor malta im guessing)

biggest priced winner was kicking king which i got at 20s bout a week before the race
with doubts about his participation, went in again at 4s on the day
    Never a moments worry there
close second sir rembrandt without best mate at 18s
gold cup a race thats been miles better than any other for me

    best moment...so many
best mate winning his third cup was special
never seen the horse put a foot wrong
the race between edredon/direct route was special also

Biggest win and best moment: AP bet 50 euro freebet on Champagne In the supreme at 16-1

Biggest loss - Boston Bob in the RSA also my worst moment. Would have cleaned up If he didn't fall imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭phenomenalcat

Backed Carrickboy last year at 80s on betfair , Venetia Williams and threadwell combo hoping for more of the same next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Wouldn't be a big gambler, so not sure about biggest winner.

Maybe Benefficiant last year at 25/1.

Best moment up to last year would be any of Istabraq's CH wins. My favourite horse of all time.

Then Last year I went to Cheltenham for the first time, and had a decent sized bet (for me :P ) on Our Conor. To see Bryan Cooper, a lad from Tralee, cruise around the bend, in the first race I had the pleasure of seeing live in Cheltenham, was like a dream. I don't think i'll forget that race for a long time.

I've been trying to forget one of my biggest price winners for years because I got ZERO return.

Basically, saved up £50 to back just 3 horses. Had the unbeatable favs in the Gold Cup & Champion Hurdle at odds around 6/4 and evs roughly. And a yoke I fancied in the four miler at 33/1.

Done 3 £10 x Doubles & £20 Treble. The two hotpots winning would guarantee stake return at least.

You can probably guess...the 2 hotpots I was told to back lost and my 33/1 shot won leaving me with nothing. Even a double would have been grand.:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭dirkmeister

The biggest winner : In 2012 I had a shed load of trebles/ doubles done. I think it was about 9 in total...I had Hurricane Fly in 8 of them. I know it's practically impossible for these things to come off but last year I decided to go all in on a 4 fold of Simonsig,Quevega, Sprinter Sacre and Bobs Worth. I just couldn't see anything touching them. I took the Friday off work and as they turned for home Bobs Worth was just starting to make up the ground. The feeling I had was surreal, and I don't think I appreciated how much I had won. All told that bet netted about 4 grand.

The biggest priced winner I ever had was Hairy Molly in the bumper at 33/1. I had just about the bus fare home from college. I then went straight across the road and backed Sir Jimmy Shand to romp home in some place like Huntingdon.
That was a great night, thought I was a real hot shot.

My best Cheltenham moment is a tough one, while Bobs Worth winning last year is a great memory I have fond memories of watching Big Bucks beating Grand Crus in a pub in London where inexplicably I seemed to be the only person shouting on Big Bucks! Inglis Drever holding off Kasbah Bliss was a super race too!

I had a Monkey (Sterling when the exchange was fairly toxic heading over to the mainland) Each-Way @7/1 on Total Enjoyment to win the Champion Bumper on St. Patrick's Day in 2004. I thought I had the game well and truly worked out. The following evening after watching Best Mate win the Gold Cup for the 3rd time I had a bag of sand Each-Way (on course) on Harchibald @8/1 to win the County Hurdle. He probably traded at 1.2 or less between the last 2 flights but he died a death and came 5th beaten a neck for 4th. If I had backed him in a shop (well a few shops) I would have got back paid on the 5th (£3,000) but as we all know only 4 places on the course. I was only 23 at the time. I was waking up in sweats for a few weeks after...seeing Carberry sitting motionless...taking dead aim as Mark Johnston the commentator would say. I could write a a very long book of funny hard luck stories.

Another day I was in Fairyhouse...the day of all the Grade 1's 15th Dec. 2010. Myself and few mates were up and down all day...and then we piled into Mikael D'haguenet...fell at the last. I thought he would have won but who knows. We then got stuck into Twist Magic to win the Peterborough Chase (being run at Newbury) he was cantering all over the field having pulled a few lengths clear when he capsized at the 2nd last last. We had got serious word for an Alan King horse to win the bumper at Newbury. This was our get out option...We got rightly involved. We were in the car heading in the Navan Road when there was a row over who would ring for the commentary. Then I rang up and caught the final few strides where I heard "it's another winner for Alan King"...I hung up straight away. We were all celebrating. Then another mate rang and said "that was unlucky"...Turns out King had 2 in the race and won with with the outsider. I nearly collapsed.

...the biggest winnings I had would have been last year...had a nice treble of simonsig hurricane fly and quevega, and without looking at winnings stuck it all on our conor...

....my biggest odds was that berties dream....think everyone had that tip...had 15 each way at 33/1...back then I'd have classed that as a big bet(how betting gets bigger each year)=...
...best moment was probably master minded for his second queen mother, but quevega last year had me loving horse racing at a different level, definitely a crush on her...
...oh, and I'm hoping that next year I'll be having brand new answers, and wish everyone hear the exact same....

Was on Joe's Edge at 50/1 a few years ago thats been the biggest priced one. Had a nice touch last year on Rajani Express at 25/1 last year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 913 ✭✭✭tomaussie

MY BIGGEST WINNER was Our Conor last year. Had a fairly hefty bet on him. For some reason I backed him like he couldn't lose. I was literally working out my winnings before the race started. I can't remember why I had so much confidence at the time.

MY BIGGEST PRICED WINNER WAS Alderbrook @ 33/1 before a hurdle was ever jumped in Public. It was my last bet as a teenager before I left Ireland with my family. Think I had about 4-5 dockets with £20 ew on each.

MY BEST CHELTENHAM MOMENT was backing Albertas Run in the Rynair. I made the horse a 5/2 shot and my philosophy was to keep backing it until it reached 5/2 but it never did and I won a lot of money but the ride McCoy gave it was beautiful and I never doubted for a second. One of my favourite winners ever. I've never been so calm watching a race.

My biggest winner was a €1 lucky 15 on the wednesday in 2009. Placed the bet on the Tuesday evening

    Tricky Trickster
    Mikael D'Hauganet
    Cooldine
    Dunguib

Over 3 grand i got back. Haven't been close since!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 349 ✭✭shy-tall-knight

Mine too. That day was simply majestic, had Sizing at 14's, First Lieutenant at 8's and Carlito Brigante at 20's!! Didn't do any multiples sadly but still an unreal day's punting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Idole First - backed him at 33/1 in Coral Cup and again the following year in 2m 5f Handicap Chase at 14's....owes me nothing :D

Best moment - prob Flagship Uberalles winning QM in 2002 or Hurricane Fly winning last year

best moment - about six or seven years ago was over on the Thursday with work. Had to fly back to Dublin that night.

had a terrible time of it betting wise but a good day out.

was down to about my last fiver and looking ahead to a trip home hungry / sobering up / hungover and with empty pockets. bloke I half know suggested that there was word for Butlers Cabin in the next (4 miler?), put my fiver down on the tote and collected at something like 48/1

I have won (a lot) more money but that was the sweetest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,123 ✭✭✭Imhof Tank

Biggest win was French Ballerina 1998 Supreme Novices. About 5/1 I think she was, second fav behind a bit of an Irish banker in Sound Man.

Had given up punting from 1 Jan 98 and had holiday booked that March so I would be away for the festival flying out on the Saturday before. Was at a business meeting on the Friday in Naas where a local solicitor down there who would be well known in racing circles told me the mare wouldn't be beaten. He was very keen to stress the fact that Graham Bradley would be riding - as in the information was even more "reliable" for that reason if you know what I mean.

Had a large bet on the Friday, headed off on hols - ended up in an early "Internet Café" in Cadiz on the Tuesday (with present wife in tow) trying to get the owner to log onto the BBC sport on the "world wide web" for results. This was in the very early days of the internet (for me anyway) and we were off the beaten track with little English spoken so it was a comical scene me trying to explain Cheltenham to them and trying to get the results.

Mare duly hacked up of course, just like my man said.

Not the biggest price but my best Cheltenham winner was Mikael D'Haguenet a few years ago (2009 I think). Backed him like defeat was out of the question and he duly obliged.

But for a horse that showed so much promise his career never really progressed after that.

MY BIGGEST WINNER Imperial Commander, I started getting stuck in at 20's and still filled my boots that day at 8's. I even got read out on the Morning Line and gave Paddy Brennan and the panel a good laugh. I emailed in saying it was great seeing Big Mac in a Kauto scarf as he is always wrong and Denman will need to have some race to beat IC.

MY BIGGEST PRICED WINNER WAS Pigeon Island 33/1

MY BEST CHELTENHAM MOMENT the same day as the other two, I was down to €40 to play with that morning and had Barizan placed at 33/1 ew, Imperial Commander won, Baby Run won 9/2, Pigeon Island won 33/1 and Pause and Clause 14/1, some day.

My biggest winner was on the same day is you hb. Did an ew lucky 15, a bet I rarely do,Soldatino 13/2, Berties Dream 40/1, Baby Run 13/2 and one of Nicky's that placed 5th in the race that Pause and Clause won. Got the best of the prices with Bet 365 and also got paid on 5th in the last leg. Had a palpitation as they jumped the second last as the one I was on led over it, Can't remember his name.

My biggest priced winner-the aforementioned Bertie's Dream. Had a seperate ew single bet on him at 40/1

Best Cheltenham moment-aside from Bertie's Dream was probably Katchit winning the Champion Hurdle. I had a larger than usual AP bet on him at Christmas at 10/1 thinking he would be much shorter nearer the day and intending to lay off as I had done it on betfair. Never got short enough to lay off and decided to sit tight. Also, although I had no financial interest, watching Dawn Run turn what looked like certain defeat into victory back in the day. Still an amazing race to watch all these years later.

Anybody have memories of the touch on Wither or Which in the '96 bumper. I know we all get tips and inside info for cheltenham weeks and months in advance but this is the only one that I got months in advance that actually won.

I was on Golden Alpha in the 1999 bumper months in advance. Beat by what I though was a 50/1 rag on the day. A "rag" he'd beaten easily a month before

Monsignor turned out a bit better than that in the end however

Didn't some of the people around Sublimity have him at ridiculous prices when he won the Champion, think they had bets that were well over the 100/1

the biggest bet i have ever had on was with moscow flyer. normally i bet small enough but had 50 on him. it was the year azertyuiop made a mistake early on.

My biggest price winner had to be Punjabi in the champ Hurdle. Think he was about 25s.

My biggest priced winner was Une Artiste in The Paddy Power Naps table of 2012 at 40-1 and led to a nice pay-out in same !
The biggest pay -day (in relative terms) and best memory was Northern Games win in the 1984 Daily Express Triumph Hurdle , I had £50 e-w at 25-1 and for a young pup at the time this was a monster bet , had a very strong tip from a local cattle dealer and His win will be forever etched in the memory !
