Extended test drive of a car

Hello in regard to buying a 2nd hand car from an independent dealer, is it fair to ask them for an extended test drive of a car ? e.g. to take the car for a 2/3 hour test drive Or would they frown upon something like this

I would think most would insist you transfer your insurance over and would only do it if you had fully comprehensive insurance to cover them should you write the car off. They might also want to take your car while you are taking the test drive.

I've only ever heard of extended test drives from main dealers, never independents. Nothing to lose from asking!
