Advice on a Corsair PSU(RM Series) for future GPU upgrades

    Hey guys,

I'm just looking for some advice on a PSU upgrade for a GPU upgrade in future and I was looking at the Corsair RM series, particularly the RM650. I like them for the silent function as well where the fan won't spin up until a certain percentage of wattage is being pulled, but I also think it's a safe choice with plenty of headroom for upgrades.

tl;dr If anyone can tell me if the RM650 will fit my case(BitFenix Merc Beta), are there any better deals and is it good enough for when the (true)next gen of GPUs come so that I could stick a 780TI+ and not have to worry?.

(No I don't ever plan to go SLI or Crossfire)
    Case: BitFenix Merc Beta
    PSU: Antec Basiq VP450
    MOBO: ASRock B75 Pro3 LGA1155
    CPU: Intel Core i5-3570
    RAM: 8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9
    GPU: HIS HD 7850 GDDR5 2048MB
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB SATA 6GB's
    LG GH24NS(CDROM Drive)

It's a good psu, just a bit on the expensive side. It is fully modular and gold rated though I guess.

Thanks, BB, any idea if it'd fit in my case, power high end cards?

Oh, and if there is anywhere cheaper?

You won't get that particular one any cheaper really. It's a very solid psu.

You'll be fine for any card. It should fit no problem as well. It's a standard sized psu.

I have one.I got it vat free elsewhere but found amazon (free del) and pixmania to be the cheapest for it.

Its great for silence.Only downside (albeit minor) is the connections are very tight when connecting them to the psu and the cables are very stiff.

Its only slightly longer than most psu's by about 1cm.

That downside sounds fairly likable after installation :D

What's it like for airflow as I was wondering would it be a plus or a minus as of right now I only have three fans, stock intel cooler, stock rear fan and the stock cooler on my CPU, did you mount the fan facing up or down?

I have mine mounted sideways with fan facing outward.
If you have vents on the bottom of your case mount it with fan down as that will pull cold air in and exhaust out the back. That way you dont need to worry about it pulling any warm air from inside your case.

This is odd, the one on Amazon is Gold rated, the one on pixmania comes to 105 and is bronze, the gold one for me on amazon is cheaper too

It is gold rated according to corsairs site.
I'd use amazon as there much better to deal with if you have any problems.

Ah good, the case I happen to have has a big "grill-like" vent on the bottom.

Thats handy.Does it have a dust filter on it?
That would help but it really depends on how much dust you have in your house.:p

I'm plagued with dust no matter how much cleaning is done

Yeah, my friend gave me a spare one, we have similar cases, only problem is it covers the non-existent bottom fan on the case, not the PSU intake, fits lovely though:rolleyes:

Dust is an issue, should I just use some tape to keep it on the PSU intake lol?

When you screw the psu into place there might be a gap to fit the filter or failing that you can use a stretched piece of the wifes/Gfs tights :P
