Scrap it?

My friend bought his first car, a 2004 Opel Corsa, two weeks ago and last week found out compression was way down in cylinder 1 and 3. He was going to go ahead and get the engine rebuilt(€1000) but he was, IMO thankfully, talked out of it.

He rightly refuses to sell it on again to another unaware buyer. So what are his options in getting rid of it? I can only think of the scrap yard in Pouladuff but I can't see him getting any more than €100, if even that.

I really feel for him as he paid nearly €2k for it. Any ideas?7

    Cheers.

That's a bummer alright. I suppose it was a private sale and he didn't notice anything wrong when test driving car?
About the bad compression, is he sure? What are the symptoms?
He can take it to another garage and get a second opinion.

Yes, he knows the craic with a private sale so he is not going to try chase up the previous owner. I mentioned it to him that it looked like it was burning oil when I seen him drive off one day. He checked for oil the next day and it was nearly empty so he took it to the garage where they done a compression test and confirmed the piston rings were shot.

    Engine swap?

Someone mentioned that but adding the cost of the engine and labour up? I could see it being over €700 at least and no guarantee that engine will be A1.

Go to garage and trade in ?

I have known of plenty doing so.

Sure my sister done over 50k kms without even checking the oil or even knowing she actually had to get the car serviced.

The car is worthless as is. He may as well get the engine done as spend 2k again.

If it was me I'd put it up on done deal. If the car is worth 2k and he sells it for let's say 500 and someone puts in another 500 there still saving themselves a bargain. Chances are they won't be paying for labour because it would probably be someone who fixes them up and sells them on :)

    A bargain for someone else?

You'd get 250-300 in any breakers for it.
Depending on what the rest of the car is like, tax test etc you would get 500-700 or so if you put it up on donedeal as a damaged repairable.

I just cannot see anyone paying €500-700 for a 10 year old Corsa with a shagged engine. If it was me I'd try my best to source a reconditioned engine for it.
