Switching BB&home phone providers - is this normal procedure?

On friday I cancelled my parents current BB & home phone package to move to another provider as they were offering us a better deal. they were not in contract and I was told I needed to give 30 days notice so this 30 days took effect from Friday. I then rang the new provider and signed up with them and told them I had just started my 30 days notice with the old providers and was told they would take care of the rest.
On sunday night we lost BB and phone in the house. I rang the old provider today to check were we cut off already? or what was going on. was told yes they had disconnected us so I thought ok we will be billed up until today but was told no we will be billed until end of 30 day notice. Is this normal? I was of the impression that if we had to give 30 days notice the service would not be cancelled until end of that notice, not 2 days later and charged for BB & phone service for another 27 days we are no longer receiving.

Reason I thought this is the very same day I rang my mobile phone provider to switch from bill pay back to payg and was told also 30 days notice and in 30 days time I will be switched over...this make sense! the story above doesnt!

If you use your UAN to transfer to new provider your old provider can only charge for the service you used. If they are trying to charge 30 days notice even though you transferred go to ComReg

I understood that if you were not in contract then you did not have to notify your current provider. You just gave the new provider your UAN and they managed everything. You would get service from your old provider up until the actual switch. I have just done this (Eircom phone line moving to Magnet Broadband) and line was working right up to the point that it switched to Magnet.

I do expect to get charged the full 30 days from eircom as they do state you must give them 30 days notice but I assume that runs from when Magnet notified eircom of the line switch. I'll see what happens.
