Is my price unrealistic??

    Hello all,
As some of you will know, I recently purchased a new set of wheels. Took delivery on Saturday. All good.

Currently trying to sell the Lancer. I have the following advert on donedeal for almost three weeks now. Not one call.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/05-mitsubishi-lancer-1-6-comfort/6455913

    Is my price that nuts?
Are the general public completely allergic to taxing anything over 1.4??
    Am I doing something wrong??
I'm at a loss, I genuinely believe this car is a good buy considering I have left a little haggle room in the asking price?
My mate is selling his missus's '04 Corolla and expects to get €3.5k
I can't even get a phone call for the Lancer, 1 year newer and almost €1k cheaper.

    Any suggestions..??!!!

I'm no expert but the car looks spot on to me. I know a couple of lads in the industry who say they can't shift 1.6L Petrols for love nor money, maybe the demand just isn't there.

no demand sadly.....thats the way it is right now.

As above, price is what I was expecting - right on the button/

The fact that it is petrol combined with the brand means that a sale (a quick one anyway) will be difficult.

Maybe drop the price to 1999 if no interest soon? Depends how quick you want it gone vs how much money you need from the car/

Looks alright to me; its priced cheaper than anything on Carzone anyway!

I guess the fact that its a 1.6 petrol, and the fact that its not necessarily the first car you think of when looking at a petrol car in that range, isnt doing it any favours.

Ya, I guess. I could do with selling it, considering its parked up and declared off the road.!
I'm going to stick my ground. It's a damn good little car.!

A well written add with good photos ,cant see what more you can do,only lower the price, i know you don't want to give it away, if i was looking for that type of car that add would get my attention, have to be patient i suppose.

It's 1.6 litre in a class dominated by 1.3/1.4 litre cars but mostly Lancers are harder to shift than the likes of a Corolla or Focus for example. To be fair your advert is only 2 days old so it can take time to sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,686 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Looks like a bargain to me.
Someone will pick it up Id say. I wouldnt be reducing it yet anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,532 ✭✭✭JohnBoy26

Those lancers aren't very popular but give it a chance, It might only take the one call for it to sell.

I bumped it two days ago. It's up over two weeks.!
The 1.6 is what is screwing me I think alright.

Thats what I'm thinking. I reckon if one serious buyer looks at it, it will sell.
Just gotta wait for that buyer to show up.!

"All electric" - are the seats electric?

You didn't mention alloy wheels in the ad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,699 ✭✭✭ronaneire

Not the best of sellers even in a 1.3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

Might I suggest pricing it at 2500. A lot of people when they are putting in their price ranges might use numbers that end in 000 or 500 as their limit.
This might make you show up in more searches. Also, when doing so say in your ad price drop was 2650.

Note these are just suggestions OP. If you disagree with them or you need to get 2650 for the car ignore my advice.

Speaking of 1.6 petrols being hard to shift, a friend of mine has been to see 3 Audi a3's in the past fortnight. One priced at 5k (it was a shed) and the other 2 both priced at 5950.

He bid €5k for both of the other two cars (both in a garage) and neither gave a straight yes or no answer, nor bothered to ring after requesting his number. Didn't even try and haggle. I thought that was strange.

No. I was just referring to windows front & back and the mirrors.
I assumed that was the universal understanding of "all electric" on a standard car like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

The A3 will be easy shift for close to the asking price. There is always some young lad who comes into a few pound and sees the audi and doesnt haggle well.

Its mad how hard it is to shift anything thats a 1.6L petrol. It took 2 months and a price drop of about €2,500 to get rid of the fathers Mondeo

I dunno, I suppose because the sellers in price drop ads are usually trying to make you think you are getting a bargain when really you are not.

In my experience, cars with price drop in the ad usually aren't bargains at all and instead are either very overpriced or else not in very good condition and not worth the money the seller is looking for them.

I appreciate that this isn't the case with the op's car though and that you were only trying to give genuine advice. I wasn't having a dig so apologies if it came across that way.

Or just trying to sell the car perhaps?
The common mentality is that a car listed at 10k down from 11k is "better value" or "a better deal" than the same car listed at 10 from the beginning.

The "all electric" term isn't a good one. I reckon it means different things to different people.

    To me it'd mean 4 x e/w's, e/m's, rc/l, and electrically adjustable seats.

To others it'd mean less perhaps?

Good luck with the sale - the car looks decent.

No offers over the phone, please come view the car, take it for a drive or feel free to bring a mechanic.

Maybe I'm being a bit picky here but that comes across as being a little bit anal to me. You're based in Mayo which isn't going to have a very large market for your car so if someone was going to be travelling a long distance they might want to discuss a price over the phone first.

Other than that I'd drop it to €2,500, people are weird about numbers.

dunno if "weird" is a good word. I'm currently looking for a car, have 2k on a side with a bit of leeway, but obviously I'm putting 2.5 as upper bracket in hope that I will find something "better" and bring the price down to let's say 2.3k

I didnt think it was a dig just wanted to see why you thought that. I ll have an auld look at dondeal searching for price drop and see for myself if they tend to be overpriced/****e.

    You could be right

I know what you mean, but I was the contact when Dad was selling his car 6 months ago. The amount of guys looking for my best cash price etc over the phone was unreal.
I don't see much point in entertaining this as it immediately renders my asking price useless IF they come to look at the car.
I much prefer to tell callers that there is room to manouvre in the price but I won't talk specifics until they have viewed and driven the car.

Times change and people think and hope that there might be a good drop on the price. An example you are asking €2650 and they think you are going to drop it down to €2000. You will always get them.

Maybe you if you drop the price to €2450 you might get someone to come look at it.

I see how it matters really? Its not like your price is going to be determined by meeting the buyer; you know what its worth, or more specifically what you hope to get for it, so if someone rings looking for best price and you tell them €2300 or whatever then if it gets them down to look at the car then mission accomplished.

Everyone knows that when buying a car there is going to be some wiggle room on price; especially for a car like that (it might be different if its was something that will have a lot of interest almost immediately). Your main aim now is to just get people interested enough to actually come and look at it. I dont think its necessarily overpriced, however price is dictated solely by what people are willing to pay, so if you are getting no interest then you are going to have to accept that its not worth as much as you think.

OP, that looks like a very good Ad and a fair price. Its amazing how small 1.6 petrol units are considered too large and thirsty in Ireland. I don't blame the people, in the main I blame the Government. The cost to own and run a car has gone through the roof in this Country.

I'm worried by your situation that I won't be able to shift my yoke either. I'm putting a 1.6 up on Done Deal in the next few days and it doesn't look as good as yours! :(

Speaking of which, I just saw my first new A3 Saloon about 5 minutes ago.

    Nice looking car.
