Claiming back road tax?

So I am trading in my car this week! Yay! But it is taxed until August. I don't really want to let this go as its 636 tax for the year which could give me back € euro if I can claim it back.

So can I claim it back, if so how do I do this?

You can't. You can only claim it back if it is declared scrap - I can be corrected on this but that's as far as I know.

'Refunds are normally issued where a vehicle is scrapped (by an Authorised Treatment Facility), stolen or exported. They are not issued where a vehicle has been sold. There must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc for a refund application to be considered'

I know the feeling, had car taxed for the whole year and sold it weeks later.
Well, at least the new owner will be happy and it's a good selling point.
If you where selling privately, you could get part of it back via the sales price.

Indeed. Just build it into the selling price.

You can be sure the dealer selling it will use that as a major selling point to maximise their profit, car dealers are as big if not bigger crooks than bankers/politicians,they offer you bottom drawer prices then resell at top dollar

The tax office are very sparse with their information on refunds. Nobody wants to give back money.
The citizens advice bureau list the circumstances in which you may get a refund
The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,
The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,
The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,
The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.
Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered. Where a vehicle has been scrapped you will need a certificate of destruction issued by an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility.

No, they are just business people looking to make as much profit as they possible can for their business. That's what they are paid to do.

Did you really believe that he was giving you €2500 for it?

You can bet your ass that he made his money on what you purchased. Not inconceivable that what he gets for your trade in will be clear profit.

Prosecuted for doing what exactly? They make you an offer on the car; you either accept or you dont. What they do with it after that is their own business. Nobody is forcing you to sell your car to the dealer; you always have the option to sell it elsewhere for a better price if you dont like the price that you are being offered for a trade in.

I googled as you said but I could not find one instance of a Garage in the South being prosecuted for anything connected with giving bottom prices and selling at top dollar.

The assumption on that is that it is not regarded as fraud or crookery so all those dealers in "the South"who work on a profit basis have been done a grave disservice.

That is not to say that there are not fraudulent or crooked dealers around.

I politely suggest you look deeper into it as you will find dealers who have been convicted for all sorts, the top dollar part refers to cars being clocked as an example,it was in the national tabloids a while back,i'll leave ye make what ye want of it and i'll "stop digging" as the OP said. :)

The OP(me) never said a word to you! Read the thread!

But I have to agree with what has been said I don't see anything wrong with taking a car on trade in and selling it on for profit. The buyer gets rid of their current car without the hassle of selling private and walks away with a new car with a few months of a guarantee on it! Happy days!

You referenced the OP which I think means Original Poster which is me in this instance. Calm down I was simply giving my opinion in a discussion and was not making reference to digging at all, if you can't handle people not agreeing with yours then maybe you should not be posting here?:)
