Brother's 40th - Touring Bike

    Dear Boardsies,

My brother is 40 at the end of the month, and thinking of getting him a bike. He's a keen cyclist - hybrid for daily use and a vintage (albeit a little too large) reynolds tubed bike for weekend rides.

A new touring bike (the missing link between the hybrid and the vintage racer!) would fit the bill for him - he's got the panniers, and his cycling style is more laid back touring than sportive / sports cycling.

    Only criteria are:
    • Budget - 1000 Euros max (bike to work scheme). So net cost around 500 - 600 after tax relief.
    • Available in Dublin (ideally). Can't do online purchase.

Looking at a Ridgeback Mercury at the moment that ticks a lot of boxes. Personally don't know the brand or bike - but looks decent for the spec and price. It's got a nice Reynolds frame, mudguards and more relaxed touring style. Being a touring bike it'll take panniers with no hassle.

Anyone got any other suggestions, would love to hear.

You can't legally use the BTW scheme to buy someone a birthday present.

    Surly Long Haul Trucker
Dawes also make some pretty awesome touring frames
Seeing a rules are meant to be broken if you could swing a titanium frame I'm sure he would enjoy building it up.

Dawes Galaxy or one of the Ultra Galaxys. They've been making them for decades now, solid choice.

His missus is doing the paper work - she runs the scheme in work (ssssh!). The money will be 'resting in my account'.

In fairness I've heard of patio sets, lawn mowers and sorts of other stuff been put through on the btw scheme. Just in case anyone thinks I'm going to be doing 10 years in the joy for tax evasion, his wife bought the bike and I'll be giving her a few quid cash.
