Why do insurance companies ask how many miles you do a year?

Why do insurance companies ask how much mileage you do per year?
Is there any way they could even know how much you do?

I was asked how many miles I do on average per year, I said about 5k, even though at this stage its looking to be about 10k per year but I didnt really know at the time.

They didnt ask me how many miles are currently on my car. Even if I do have an accident can they really say "oh you've done more than 5k like you said, sorry cant cover you".

Is it a price thing? I could just say I do <5k per year even if I do flippin 30k per year and they'd know no difference. I presume they jack up the price if you say you do a lot.

So why bother asking, or even telling them the truth?

The more you drive, the more chance you'll be involved in an accident.

Yearly NCT (with odometer reading) will mean you'll have to be honest on older cars.

Yeah, so they'll charge you more if you drive a lot. But how are they supposed to know how much you drive?
They dont keep tabs on you like that..so its pointless.

Was just about to post the same thing. If the car was yours from new then they could just work out your milage from the clocks. If you purchased 2nd hand then Nct readings would give a good indication of your average milage during ownership.

Probably, I'm not sure milage would increase your premium by a huge amount. Better to be honest as insurance companies love any reason not to pay.

Sure, I would just suggest I.C.'s doing a sherlock & diggging up old nct's in case your 5001 miles unlikely

wife got a quote from AXA when she changed the value of the car to see if that decreased the quote she was told that the value made no real difference, it was the amount of mileage that she did that was the main consideration for any quote.
