Its a bit of rubber that protects the CV joint from dirt from the road. A common cause of failure. Cheap easy fix.

Yeah, it's nothing. My sis had it on a micra, same fault, think it was €40 all in.

    Cable-tie might do the job.

    Cable-tie might do the job.

Exactly, turn the offending wheel to the side and have a look at the back of the wheel, you should be able to see something like this:

One of the metal clips is missing from one end of the cone-shaped boot in the middle of the wheel, you can replace it with a cable tie. It might become a €1.50 repair rather than a €40 repair ;)

and would a cable tie be an acceptable repair?

Yes, perfectly fine. You can see in that image the thickness of a metal clip, you'd need a cable tie as thick as that. Any of the DIY stores would have bags of them.

It would depend, if the boot is cracked or torn it will need to be replaced.
    Still a small job.

Hi, don't want to start a further thread for this but just wondered is anyone was aware if damage to the body of the car would merit an NCT fail. I banged my car into a wall and the front of it has been bent in (kind of like an accordion effect). The car works fine though and it's just a visual thing really. Would I fail for this I wonder or do you think I might be ok? The test is in a few days. If it were a case that I might fail for this reason then I might try to hammer out the dent in the meantime in order to make it look a bit better.

Once there's no sharp edges or rust it should be fine. And check your lights are aligned too.

Don't worry about the dent if there are no sharp edges.
Surface rust is ok on any body panel.

Advanced rust (pitting rust) is ok on secondary body structures but extensive rust (flaking/perforating rust) is not.
Neither advanced nor extensive rust is not ok on primary body structures.
