I am wondering is there any need to pay customs,VAT or other charges including balance of payment when importing any electronics like iPhones from the UK and other countries from within the EU?i know I don't need an import licence but are any charges I may incurr.

Shouldn't be, unless it is one of the non/quasi EU mini states, like Jersey, Isle of Man etc.

Would that also refer to balance of payments

How much are you planning to import, that you think it will effect the balance of payments ?:D

Why is there a limit which would require that? I was thinking in the range of 400- 2000 euros worth of items.at what point would I need to pay charges

What do you mean by balance of payments?

If you are importing from the EU there are no limits. You may have to explain yourself if making large currency transfers out of the country, but that is anti-money laundering, not anti import.

If you are importing from outside the EU then you have to pay duty and possibly VAT. The rated depend on what you are importing.

Contact the Revenue for details, they won't ask your name so you can freely talk to them. Don't mess about if you are doing this for a business - Customs will jail you if are proved to fiddle the customs by a large amount!

Not from countries within the EU , no vat or duty to pay ( as far as I know )

Depends on what Part of the UK, Isle of Man and Jersey are UK, but not EU.

Where are you importing from in the UK? Nearest town or county? Postcode?

If it's a JE post code, a GY post code or an IM postcode then you may well have to pay Customs.

Having said that, if you are buying from an established on-line retailer based in, say, Jersey, then some of them are savvy enough to post the goods in lots of small packets, thus the value of each packet is under the €20 (or thereabouts - I forget) limit for customs.

Remember that ordering from a .co.uk or any other EU site does not necessarily mean it will come from that country. www.hmv.co.uk used to send from jersey, others could send from China.

ebay is full of chinese sellers posing as UK sellers.
