Really surprised not to see a thread here, the second day of the semis has already started. The finals are live on TG4 next weekend.

Moylette lost his semi last night to Michael Nevin, Joe Ward has got a walk-over in his semi and if Roscommon's IC wing-back Donal Ward (and an underage All-Ireland boxing champion) wins his semi it'll be an all-Ward 81kg final.

I heard moylette was completely robbed. A Knock down not counted etc. Heard it was a joke. Would he of faced a nephew of a the Irish head coach in the final. Is this true.iv No idea but heard and seen a Few saying it

Great performance from O'Reilly there to beat Darren O'Neill. Bit of a shock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Very impressed with O'Reilly there. Lovely compact style. Great balance. He has a perfect style for the pros.

Just saw one of the judges gave O'Neill all three rounds !!! WTF????

RTE says it's Joyce's 5th title. I could have sworn it was 6. He won 4 straight titles and then lost to Frampton in '09. I am sure he lost to Donovan in one championship, 2010. He lost to McDonagh in another. Maybe two to McDonagh? So, if RTE are correct then it''s his first title since 2008? That doesn't sound right. The IABA site is poor when searching for past winners.

Edit: Seems they are right. He didn't contest a final last year. Lost to Donovan in 2010 and lost to McDonagh in 2012. Just 2011 now I am looking for.

Ok, lost the 2011 final to McDonagh by DQ for low blow! Hard to believe he has waited since 2008 for a title win.

Thought the Antrim lad was robbed at 91 kg. he got knocked down in the first, but dominated after.

I thought that too. He almost stole the first rd as well.

On that fight can someone fill me in on the 'new' scoring? It was announced as a split decision yet when the scoring was shown on the screen it looked like this:

    ...............1.................. 2 .....................3................Total

    Ward.......26.................29.....................29 .............84
    Sweeney..30.................28.....................28............. 86

    a. Do the 1,2,3 on top stand for the rounds or the judges?
    b. Are the judges scores accumulated (hence the total scores on the right)?
    c. How did they arrive at 'split decision' based on the above?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

It was split because it was two judges for Ward and one for Sweeney. But Sweeney won the fight with his judge by 4 points. The other two judges had Ward a 1 point winner. Winner is the one with the most overall points. The B1/B2/B3 refers to the three judges.

Sweeney's judge must have had it 10-8/10-9/10-9 all for Sweeney. I thought Ward won rds two and three.

One of the judges had Myers a winner over Barnes. Ridiculous. Barnes is just poetry in motion

Yea he was robbed, If he had not have been knocked down in the first He would have won every round on my card. If it was the old scoring system in place he would have run away with it. Taught McCullough was unlucky against Conlon too. Anyone notice the muted reception to Kenny Egan? Taught that was strange...

Yeah Barnes has a serious skillset. Be great to see him go to Rio and get a medal.

Ok, but there are 5 judges announced before the fight. How come it's reduced to 3?

So the points are accumulated, but why announce a 'split decision' then? That doesn't make sense.

the two "outlying" judges scores are eliminated- the two most away from the average

Then how did we get one of the judges scoring it 30-26?
There were two judges wider than that?
Or two judges equal to that? Which means three judges thought Sweeney won all three rounds?
And if there were three 30-26s then the two other ones are the odd ones out.

    This needs explaining.

    http://sportsnewsireland.com/boxing/boxing_irish/new-regulations-introduced-by-amateur-boxings-governing-body-2013-03-23/

"Another important point is the launch of a new scoring system. The new system used across all programs will be based on the ‘Ten Point Must-System’ with five judges around the ring. Out of these five judges, only the scores of three of them, which will be randomly drawn by a computer, will be taken into account. Nobody will know until the end of the bout which judges’ scores will have been considered. In addition, scores will only be revealed at the end of each bout."

    Thanks for that.

What's the story with announcing 'split decision' if it's accumulative?

I can only think that the fact that the random judges selection was split that it's called a split decision. Simliar to pro boxing. Two judges have it for one man and one for the other man; that's a split decision. Doesn't matter how wide the scores are or how the judges scored the fight. It's split.

    Good read here: http://www.aiba.org/documents/site1/docs/Rules/AIBA%20Technical%20Rules%20-%20August%2023,%202013%20-%20OK.pdf

He didn't have it handy at all. McComb is a very skillful boxer. Close fight in all rds. Aggression and pressing forward was the key for the victory.

Thanks again for that, but I didn't see anything in it about accumulated scores, meaning the scores I highlighted above showed Ward should have been awarded the decision - two judges gave the fight to him.

I know McComb is, i've seen him a few times before. He was coming at McComb the whole fight and i thought he (DOJ) landed a lot more flush shots to be honest...

I haven't read it all but I am almost certain it mentions that the winner is the boxer with the most points (total/accumulated) from the random 3 judges selection. The announcing of split decision coming into when that random selection has 1 judge going one way and the other two going the other way.

    Edit:

"At the end of a Bout the winner will be determined on the basis of the total score of the Judges and will be declared the winner of the Bout on points in accordance with the Scoring System by either unanimous or split decision."

I must watch it again, but I didn't think DOJ landed much more. Close throughout. He had the few "big" moments.

    So must i,
You could well be right. The neighbour had popped in at the time chatting so my full attention might not have been on it. But i thought he was impressive, and had him winning all rounds.

No argument from me as regards him winning all rds. I just thought they were very competitive rds. Delighted for DOJ. What a consistent and committed competitor. 10 years and I think that was his 9th final.

    How old he now?
I will watch it again, and i posted that midway through last round but i did think he was the clear winner of all rounds. I mean, i did not think McComb won any. At all. But will watch again properly.

I believe DOJ is 27 years old.
