What is a Diocesan Chapter?

    Hi,
I hope you don't mind me starting a thread on this but I couldn't quite get a clear answer on google.

If a priest goes from being a parish priest to being a member of the Diocesan Chapter, what exactly does this mean?

Do they move out of their parish? Do they still give mass or is it some kind of administration role?

    Thanks in advance.

"The Diocesan Chapter assists the Bishop in the more solemn liturgical worship of the Cathedral; its members are known by the honourary title of "Canon", and their twelve stalls form part of the furnishings of the Cathedral High Altar. The Chapter is presided over by the Dean of the Chapter. Chapter meetings normally take place in the Cathedral Conference Room."

In the past, Canons would have had a lot of responsibility but at this stage it is mostly an honorary title.

I see, so it's essentially a kind of extra title to bestow on a priest which means they will occasionally perform functions and assist the Bishop but their day-to-day remains (pretty much) the same in their parish?

Their day to day job remains exactly the same. They might have to attend meetings with the Bishop three or four times a year. Their role is more advisory than anything

Thanks, that is way clearer than the stuff I was finding.

No problem - the workings of the Church can be a mystery!
