    Hi,

I was thinking of doing the Gran Fondo 3 - Go on a 160km cycling adventure with Strava (and buying the jersey) but only have went to 120km on a cycle. I was ok with that but I was sleepy and tired.

Can you recommend a cheap energy gel for the one off cycle ? I regularly do 50 - 75km cycles but could do with a boost.

Make your own energy bars, I made a batch a while back, you can freeze them, put them in the back pocket and by the time you are peckish they are defrosted and ready to go!

    I used these once - http://www.powerbar.com/

Gave me dehli-belly, wasn't nice. I know others have used them with no issue though.

Personally I tend not go for the energy bar / gel stuff. I prefer to use something like nature vally bars and / or Zim's or Zero's in the water bottle. A wee bag of trail mix is good to nibble on and you can't beat bannana's.

Kellogs Nutrigrain or Aldi/Lidl copies for training . Frys Turkish Delight for 'serious ' racing . After six a day for nine days of the Ras the sight of one will send shivers down yer spine!

cheap as chips, dead tasty, and easy to make. i've modified slightly by adding a layer of chocolate on top at times, grab a bar of cooking choclate, melt and pour over when done. replacing some of the nuts with banana flakes is a nice change as well

    taken from : http://greatist.com/health/recipe-fruit-and-nut-bars

    Makes 16 squares.
    What You'll Need:

    ⅓ cup flour
⅛ teaspoon baking soda ⅛ teaspoon baking powder ⅓ cup packed brown sugar 3 cups dried fruit (use a mix — I used apricots, dates, and cherries) 1 ½ cups dry roasted nuts (again, mix it up! My choice was pecans and almonds) 1 egg ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

    What to Do:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a 8-by-8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, or coat with nonstick spray.
Coarsely chop fruit and nuts until most pieces are relatively uniform in size. Set aside.
Whisk flour, baking soda, and baking powder together in a large bowl until evenly combined. Add sugar, fruit, and nuts, and mix to coat all fruit and nuts with the flour mixture.
In a separate bowl, beat egg with vanilla until frothy and thick, about 2 minutes.
Stir egg into flour mixture until evenly mixed.
Spread mixture into prepared pan, using a spatula to smooth out the top.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.

I got these in Lidl for €0.99. Saves me doing the cooking. They are 200 calories each but hopefully I won't each too of them on the 160k

If you're moving at any sort of pace and you're an average to husky sized gentleman you're burning better part of 1000 calories an hour. You can get away with a few of those bars on a 160k. :D

Don't forget to drink though, and I don't mean beer.

Rule of thumb - 1 piece of food per hour and a bottle an hour, more if its warm. Rough guide.

Bananas and Fig Rolls - relatively inexpensive and available almost everywhere. ;)

Bananas dont have enough carbs/calories for racing .I once got savage knock despite having 5 or 6 of them ('up the road' all day). Also Id imagine a fair few people would find fig rolls dont go down too easy (too 'chewy'?)and youd need 4-6 to match a 'bar' Id say .Race food needs to go down REALLY quick n easy .

Do they still sell tropical high five, loved that stuff. A powerbar and a banana rounds it off

I don't think the OP was thinking of racing - just getting through a 160km cycle.

I did the 160k today and eat 4 of the bars... I have to say they really helped. Usually I don't take food out with me as I was trying to lose a few kgs but there was that 400m high climb which was tough.

165kms at an average of 31.5km/h! That's seriously impressive.

Try these breakfast bars. Recipe is from Odlums. Porridge is the main ingredient and I add nuts and seeds on top of the standard recipe. They taste great and give plenty energy.
