06 passat calliper question

Can anyone tell give me a rough price on how much for parts and labour to replace a calliper on a 06 VW Passat? Orange fault light is illuminated on dash and display screen is saying fault with parking break. Parking break is not disengaging when electronic button is pressed but if pressed a few times it will eventually disengage. I can feel the car lifting on one side when I try to drive when fault is accruing. so my guess it must be just the one calliper that's not releasing.

    This could be expensive.

PM GeorgeDalton to get a quote. A lot of lads on boards rate him highly.

Replacing a caliper on these is a few hundred but it may be possible to fix the fault without replacing. While dealers etc will only replace, there have been cases of damaged wiring at the caliper causing this and therefore only needing a wire repair.

Is there a warning beep also when you drive?

Get a mechanic to check out the fault codes, could be a faulty brake ECU, it's a common issue with the Passat.
Could also have a cracked brake caliper too..

Yea there is a warning bleep aswell. Was talking to my mechanic there I've to drop it into him Monday. He was saying 9 times out of 10 it's an electrical fault but obviously he has to take a look.

Sounds like a faulty Brake Unit/ECU, hard to get 2nd hand though, but your mechanic will advise you on the correct unit needed and may be able to source...

Happened to my 06 B6, seized rear caliper motor. Got one cheap from a scrappie and swapped them.

The button often gives trouble too, known problem on them, cost about 80 squid from a main stealer if i remember and a mechanic with a proper diagnostic to wind back the piston after, all in less than an hours work.

If it the caliper however though they can be got easily from any good factor brand new for about a hundred with same labour costs.

    Best of luck OP

mister auto.ie sell new calliper for around 160 euro just in case you can't find them cheaper :)

If it is the electronic caliper, then at that price they are not new. Good price for a reconditioned caliper though.

They have a listing for these calipers at 160 to 210 euro. Looking closer at the ad, they require additional deposit until you return your old part. I can therfore only assume that they are recon units.

Button is around 15 euros from Ebay, start by replacing this .It sorted out the problem on a 08 Passat. After that its calipers. Its a bad design and they are stressed when you try to drive off with the handbrake on causing the plastic caliper motor body to crack letting in water. Some havce sealed the cracks with silicone as a temporary solution.
Mister auto is good , replaced a tank fuel pump for 100 euros delivered on the same car when GSF wanted around 245 or so, which sorted that problem.

Mister auto seem to be a disaster.
Ordered 2 brake discs. Took 2 weeks. One disc arrived. Called them then after a further 2 weeks 2 more discs arrived.
Tried using them again for wipers. Ones for left hand drive fitment arrived. Called them, refunded money.

The brake pedal must be pressed with the ignition switched on, or, preferably in my opinion, the engine running, and then the button pressed to release the parking brake, pressing the button on its own will not release the brake. I drive my daughter's '08 Passat regularly and I prefer to do it this way rather than the conventional combination of accelerator/clutch as I think it puts less stress (as another post suggests) on the assembly. Of course caution is advised as this method would involve some gymnastics if taking off on a hill!!, so always use the combination on a hill take off.

Had one of these fail on my last 06 Passat too. George sorted me out though (needed a new caliper) and no problems after that.

I'd advise NOT using the parking brake in the meantime though as you might end up with it refusing to disengage - happened to me in a car park after I'd pressed the button without thinking/out of habit. Took 30 mins of turning the car on/off before it finally (luckily) released.

Note also that if the car has Auto Hold this won't work either until you get it fixed. Be prepared for fun on hill starts in the meantime :(
