    Hi Guys

Iv just purchased an Audi A4 1.9tdi. Everything seems to be grand except for one thing. I noticed that the temperature gauge sits at around 70 (at the 10 o clock mark) Is this normal or should it rise to half way?

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

Does the needle act erratically or just don't reach halfway?
If the temp gauge doesn't reach halfway point it is probably the thermostat stuck open.
If needle moves about then it's the coolant sensor.

    Hi

The thermostat just sits below the half way mark. the first degree is 50, the second is 70 and the middle mark is 90..mine just sits at the 70 mark? Is this bad do you think?

As Biko has said it is most likely a thermostat stuck open. Do you have any problem getting heat from the heater in the car? One of the possible symptoms of a stuck thermostat is the heater does not get very warm.

It's almost certain to be your thermostat. It's a very common problem. My a4 was the same. An easy enough fix. Better to get thermostat from dealer and the plastic housing it fits into. It's quite easy to break or damage the housing on removal as it's got two plastic pins which lock onto thermostat.

It should sit at 90 and stay there once warmed up. Sounds like stat cant close fully. It's easy change. Just two allen head 6mm? bolts holding the black supply pipe to the block. Take the pipe out the way and the stat will probably need a poke to free it from the block. Remove it and put the new one in asap to minimise coolant loss.

Bolt the pipe back on and take the cap off the coolant reservoir and run the engine up to temp, turn on the heater fan in the cabin full whack and for a further 15 mins or so. That should be enough to bleed out any air.

Let the engine go back cold for a few hours and then check coolant level and top up or whatever.

Get your stat from dealer. Cheap enough maybe €30.

It'll pay for itself in improved fuel economy fairly fast!
