Just curious if anyone is attending any of the forthcoming IAA ATC open days?

I have registered for the Dublin airport one.

It appears to be aimed at any pilots using Irish Airspace.

I'd recommend it. You do have to be a pilot to attend though.

I do have a current PPL and enjoy a bit of private flying. But is the open day mainly aimed a commercial pilots?

I don't want to be the only private pilot in a room full of commercial pilots.

    From the IAA site

''Please note that in order to be eligible to attend, you must hold either a current pilot licence (CPL or PPL) or be enrolled at an IAA approved Flight Training Organisation.

Attendees will be required to present their pilot licence or, if you are training, a letter from the FTO in order to gain admittance to these events.''

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit this morning, thought all the staff were excellent with answering questions and explaining what goes on. Visit to the tower was the highlight for many I guess, myself included.

If only we had the whole day there!!

Same as, was a great day out. Really enjoyed it. Tower view is something else.

About 30 there this afternoon. Very enjoyable indeed, the whole system is amazing when you think about it. I would have loved a go on the training sim!

Thanks for this thread, didn't know there would be many from this forum there. What a great day, nice to see Air Navigation Services try to bridge the gap with GA and listen to some important feedback. This is a two way process.

Yes I say you will be fine. They just have a quick look at the licence.

I may be wrong, but i think technically your licence is not expired it's still valid albeit you cannot exercise the privileges of your licence due to a lapsed medical.

Well worth going to so put your name on the list.

I've applied, might drop them an email if accepted just to make sure there won't be an issue.

Licence is unfortunately expired, can't renew it for a lifetime EASA one as I don't have a medical.

What about switching to a CAA NPPL? All you need is to go to a GP. If you are fit to drive a car then your fine.
I know a few people up North who had medical issues so switched to an NPPL. The Ulster Flying Club could sort you out.

It is an option I am looking at as a last resort, but it's a bit of a drive up to Newtownards to fly when Newcastle is 20 mins down the road. I'm pretty confident I will get it back before summer just need to get documents/assessments to satisfy the red tape requirements. In fairness to the CAA, they've been extremely helpful and upfront about the whole process. So I'll just hope for the best and if in the summer no luck I'll look into NPPL.

Just got the email confirming my place there. Really looking forward to it.

For people who went last year, do you actually get to go up the tower and meet the controllers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭de biz

Yes you get to visit the cab subject to operational change.

Theres a BA captain particularly keen to meet one of the team!

I was at the Shannon one today, I must say it was excellent, brilliant presentation from the station manager Declan Mangan, and then a guided tour of the facility down there. Brilliant information highlighted also, well done to all involved.

The email from IAA says to look into their web page. https://www.iaa.ie/contacts

In there, email says that it's the Dublin Control Tower Building, Huntstown, Cloghran, Co. Dublin

a look at google maps gives a good idea where it is - http://goo.gl/maps/yI4h9

I have to say, I'm getting excited as it gets closer. See you there!

big thanks to IAA for organizing this, really well organized, definitely met my expectations. I imagine a day like this is a complete nightmare to folks involved, so if anyone from ATC is reading this, thank you for the hospitality!
