I don't know if I'm using the correct terms here but is there any way to use my sony tv to watch all the channels off my UPC box but to actually tune the stations into the tv and use the digital epg and the tv remote to control it? I've always found the UPC menus terrible and found the don't guide good I've plugged the coaxial cable into the tv straight and manage to tune some channels in but they're all black screen? Thanks for any help (it is a full saorview Sony kdl-32 only about two years old)

Nope. The tuner is in the UPC box.

Your TV based tuner is not being used as the UPC box over-rides it.

    Unfortunately.

It's one of the things I hate about cable TV progress.

So the only channels I can get is the sairview ones? Is there any chance of picking up freeview as far as Castleknock Dublin?

In some parts of Europe UPC offer a package of free digital cable channels that can be tuned in via a TV's cable tuner or offer a plug-in CI+ module for CI+ approved TVs for encrypted channels but neither are offered in Ireland.

But If I got a CI+ encoder would I be able to tune in UPC here because I've picked up the channels but they're all locked/encoded

No, the module that plugs into the TV is supplied by UPC and replaces the standalone UPC STB.

Won't get much of an EPG on those though!
