Hi everyone, I definitely want to further my career since receiving my degree in social care work. Can someone tell me if there is work in social work in Ireland at the moment or if those completing a masters in social work are gaining employment thereafter!? I'm looking at applying for the UCC masters in social work but want to make sure there's scope in this area!! Anything on this would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi, I graduated in June 2013 and I am currently waiting to be interviewed for the panel (got through application and video interview). In all honesty social work jobs are fairly scarce. Most are advertised through the panel and that is only advertised yearly/ every two years depending on how many are on the exisiting panel. Some people are getting work through the agencies though. Others take project worker positions while they are waiting. Im fortunate in that I have work as a project worker but I am definitely eager to get into actual social work!

If this is something you are passionate about then stick with it an apply to the masters but on average graduates don't usually walk straight into a social work position. I say usually because I am aware of one person who did gradute in 2013 and got a job from the panel straight away but I also know of people who were working in project worker positions for 4 years before they got a social work job.
