Gigabit network card recommendation?

    Hi there

Seems I need to get a new network card that can handle the Horizon 200mb speed as my motherboard's inbuilt one only does 100mb.

Any recommendations or are they all pretty much the same?

    Cheers
    Bruno

Grab something with an Intel chip in it. Other than that, you should be grand.

Are Intel ones specially reliable, as they seem to be much more expensive?

Or would something like this do me?
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TG-3468-Gigabit-Express-Network/dp/B001OQSZQ0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393673023&sr=8-3&keywords=intel+gigabit+network+card

    What motherboard do you have?

Most boards for the last few years have had at least 1000mb ethernet ports on them. It will only show up as a 100mb connection with a cat5 cable.

I needed to use a cat6 cable to get full speed on 200mb UPC. Might as well grab a cat6e while you're at it. 10gb up to 100m should last you a lifetime :) Prices aren't much different.

Can be got on amazon at whatever length you need for virtually nothing.

Some don't. I found out the hard way that HWVS misquoted the specs for my server's board (ASRock H61M-S) so I had to get a PCIE NIC instead.

And yeah, generally the Intel ones are much more reliable, and tend to give you better options, etc.

    This one's pretty cheap:

Have an Asrock N68-VS3 FX, which according to the specifics is only 10/100Mbps.

And Serephucus, that particular one is a low profile will that make any difference installing it on a mid-sized tower?

(convenient, though, as I'd need one also for my HP N40 microserver!)

Also, assume there's nothing handy in Dublin where I could get that instead of having to wait for Amazon?

Nope, it'll install just the same. If you want to stick it in a low profile case, just unscrew the bracket, and attach the low-profile one instead.

I doubt you'll get any bricks and mortar places stocking Intel NICs, unfortunately. Odds are you'd pay €20 for a Broadcom/Realtek solution instead.

Cheers, will order them from Amazon tonight!

Doh, turns out my motherboard only has 2 PCI slots and they're both taken by the graphics card!

Maybe a new mother board is needed which will have a gigabit connection.
