replace selector cable

Hi I have had my Ford Mondeo's fly wheel & clutch replaced 8weeks ago. Since then I have had trouble selecting 1st gear. Now 80% of the time I cannot select 1st gear. I have been told the gear selector cable needs replacing. Is this due to the work that was previously carried out or am I just unlucky!!
