How is the receiver connected to the TV?
Is there an audio button on the r/c?

    Can you test via scart?
Is there an audio button on the remote to select between audio description or different audio settings?

Go into the tuning menu on the tv and change sound system to "I"

    It's probably set to "BG"

Is this on the Televes receiver remote or the upstairs TV remote?

Is the receiver connected to a downstairs TV & does the audio work there?

Yes it is connected to other tvs but I believe the loop starts with this one upstairs , other tvs do not have the sound either on televes receiver but do have sound from saorview, thanks

Right, so the Televes receiver itself is definitely not on mute &, all these TVs are connected via a RF modulator of some kind, either built in to the receiver or a separate unit.

What is the model no. of the Televes receiver? Is there no TV connected to it via scart or HDMI?

Model no red 711801, I think it is connected by scart , but not definit , it's only plugged into the wall socket , receiver is downstairs , I think it is worked off a magic eye , sorry , but I don't know much about this , thanks for help

That receiver has a built-in modulator. If you check the 'TV System' menu, 'RF System', you will see which system it is outputting (PAL BG, I, DK). Try changing this & see if the sound comes back.

Peter a big thank you , if you are ever in Waterford give me a shout , I owe you one , I changed what you said and it worked , many thanks ,

Good that it's sorted. The different PAL formats had already been mentioned by kbell in post #8. The video part for BG, DK & I is the same so, the picture won't be affected if the receiver is outputting 1 variant & the TV is set up for another. The difference is the location of the sound carrier frequency within the channel.

PAL I is the UK & Ireland variant &, you would expect a multi-standard TV set up for 1 of these countries to use it. PAL BG is the default setting for the Televes box.
