    Hi all ,

I removed the exaust manifold last night and in cylinder 1,2 and 3 was soot but in cylinder 4 it was a soot and oil mixture .

I didn't do a compression test but any idea's folks . I was thinking either worn rings of worn valve seals .

    cheers

    figs

More than likely it,s fuel that was'nt burned fully when the engine was idling. I would'nt worry about it.

Anyway, out of interest, why did you take the manifold off.

I had to remove it to replace a heater plug .

Also it looks more oil than diesel fuel .

the reason I thought the seals was the van seems to be burning maybe half liter of oil last 4000 miles .

Does it have a turbo? If so its worth pulling the hot side pipe and check for oil there.

if timing was off , would all cylinders be leaking ?

no, one teeth enough to leak on 1st and 4th a bit, and keep 2nd and 3rd closed. But its more likely you need to reseat number 4 though.
