Whats the story with gate closing times with Aer Lingus long haul? Boarding pass seems to indicate the gate closing nearly 2 hours before the flight is due to leave. Is that normal? What time do people recommend getting to the airport at?

It's so people allow enough time to get through USCB. Otherwise people would just spend their time upstairs in T2 shopping/drinking/faffing about until about 30 mins before departure time forgetting they have to clear immigration.

Boarding normally starts 45-60 mins before departure.

Arriving at the airport 2 hours before departure might be cutting it a bit fine though this time of year the airport is quiet. 2.5 hours should be fine even at peak times.

Arrive 3 hours at peak times. USPC clsoed for flights 45 minutes before departure and you should realistically be there at least 60 minutes before the flight departs.

yeap agree with last post, you need three hours, Last year we had a problem with one of the ESTA's and it took over 45 mins to get it sorted... otherwise we would not have been allowed to board the plane... also security can be busy and so can immigtation....
