    From HSE Website this afternoon,

    Thursday 27th February 2014

    The HSE and Dublin City Council* announced that they have jointly commissioned a review of the current arrangements for the provision of emergency ambulance service operated by Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) in the Dublin City and County area.

    The review will be conducted by;

    Mr Martin Flaherty, OBE, Managing Director, Associate of Ambulance Chief Executives, London
    Mr Derek Brady, former Deputy City Manager, Dublin City Council and County Manager, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council
    The review will compare the DFB service with that provided by the NAS and will examine the current arrangements for the provision of the emergency ambulance service in the Dublin Area. The review will be focussed on indentifying the optimal model for the provision of emergency ambulance services and patient care taking account of quality, patient safety and value for money.

    The Review team will invite submissions for key stakeholders and it is anticipated that the review will be completed by mid 2014.

    But yet no review of the NAS that cant provide a quality service in the rest of the country ,

    The DFB's combined Fire-EMS system has been looked at by many other brigades and some in the UK are starting pilot schemes based on what they have seen here ,

    Also dublin is the 2nd safest city in the world to have an out of hospital cardiac arrest , mainly due to the fact that when a fire appliance is turned out you have 5 fully qualified paramedic getting out of tge fire truck .

    The best soultion in my eyes is to keep the fire ems model with more ambulances

    Theres no way the NAS could provide the same level or quality of cover for the same price IMO ,

    Training and constantly having to recertify 900 people to operate a rotational ambulance model is not cost efficient any more. If DFB want to keep an ambulance service they have to change the way they run that particular part of their organisation.

    To be honest , if there was a dedicated ems side they would get burnt out in a short space of time due to the volume of calls .

    There are no simple easy answers , however change enivitable

    I just hope that the service isnt lost by DFB as the people of dublin will ultimately be the big loosers
