Day After "BBQ"

Viewed a good few venues recently and they all seem to advertise this idea of a BBQ the next day. It's something we're keen on, moreso to let people sober up before driving home than making a big deal of it.

Think I've noticed, is firstly, it's very rarely a BBQ, but rather a buffet cooked presumably on a grill in the kitchen, with burgers, hot dogs, sausages, pasta salad - basically food you wouldn't order if you had the choice.

Then it seems to be bout €15-25 a head for the day after, and you've no guarantee how many will actually stay around for it, so could end up paying for 50, with only 30 eating.

Most places seem to have it indoor then (granted it's Ireland weather), but a few want us to spend €17 on a BBQ (read: second rate food), and eat it in the hotel bar, when the bar food menu in the hotel bar seems to be bout €12 for everything on the menu.

Is this something people have haggled much on? Seems to be a real money-maker for hotels. Is there a nice way of saying "instead of forcing you to eat a cheap burger, pick whatever ya want off the lovely bar menu, we'll pay for that instead"

One of the venues we went to see had it free the next day if it was a mid week wedding. Suppose you could do it either way really just ask the hotel. it is just a way again for them to make a bit of money the next day too and for people to catch up on the night before but if ye don't like it then don't go for it

well, say for example, if you tell a hotel that youre going to have 50 people there on a sunday afternoon that they wouldnt normally, then they have to have enough food and staff to cater for that, all of which incurs cost. not justifying 15e+ for burger and chips but hopefully you get my point. not their fault if only 20 then turn up.

If you really wanted to do it like that, hire a fish and chip van to come round nearby, order in 20 pizzas, lots of ways to do it to save cost. the hotel might not let you eat on their property but you can be creative there.

Cheers for the replies. I was just trying to see if there's a reason that this is priced so relatively highly in wedding packages. Presume a local bar would bit your arm off to bring in 50 customers on a Sunday afternoon.

Our venue offer a next day BBQ for €25 per person but the minimum numbers are 50!!!! Was working out way too expensive so we have booked fire at the mansion house for 30 and everyone is paying for themselves with a set menu for €29.95 per person then back to the local for a few drinks!

My sister has booked her local pub for the Sat afternoon. They will have traditional musicians and are throwing in platters of food too. Costing her nothing as they are delighted to have a crowd in when they normally wouldn't

that is a vey good idea at least there is a change of venue to freshen things up and you are giving back to the local pub

we did it and set it at about 50% of the previous days guests and had a session too.
We had the bbq food but all indoors due to Feb weather!
It was brilliant and I enjoyed it far more then the wedding day.
