How long to white fillings last?

    Hi,

    Does anyone know the average length of time a white filling lasts for? I got a white filling on a molar about 2 years ago but the tooth is starting to get sore again. Could I need to get it replaced again so soon?

    That's something I'd like to know too! I was just at the dentist today, and she told me my white filling is still perfect (I had it done a year ago). I was convinced it didn't feel right and that something was up..I was wrong! I don't actually know how long they're meant to last, only that they supposedly don't last as long as silver fillings? I should have asked her :P

    Is it the tooth or the filling that is giving you the problem?

    A well placed filling (white or silver amalgam) can last a decade or more. However white fillings are harder to place really well. That being said its the tooth that matters. If you needed a deep filling due to deep decay or problems between the teeth, then the filling may last just fine but the nerve in the tooth might give out or die. This is because of the previous decay not the filling. People make a common logical error that because the discomfort came after the filling it because of the filling, they forget why the filling was done in the first place.
