I need to get a larger bike for my 10 year old son, he's outgrown his current Islabike Beinn 20. The obvious choice is an Islabike Beinn 26 but before buying I thought it best to ask for alternative suggestions. I'd prefer to get a high quality bike that I can sell on for a fair price once he'e outgrown it and in this respect the Islabikes have been terrific, they're extremely well made, light, and are easily sold on if well looked after.

So, good bike for a growing 135cm 10 year old boy please?

I promise I'm not stalking you! I bought your cnoc 16 off you a few yrs back, it has been handed down to my youngest now and its time to start looking for something bigger for my 6 yr old, said I'd have a peek here for a Beinn and spotted your comment! don't suppose you have the beinn 20 for sale? ;)

Don't know if you saw these in the thread asking for bike for a six year old.

Look like a good option if you're not looking for a racer (yet!). Think I'm going to get one for my 6 year old. Don't look to far of the islabikes in quality certainly a lot better than some of the ironmongery I've seen proffered as kids bikes and are a nice bit cheaper. Couple of dealers around the country going to see if one of my LBS can get them in if not I'll go to Dublin.

It does look nice but its a flat bar one for the moment, can't justify €730 on it either, much as I might try.

I did indeed see the Frog bikes mentioned, and they look nice but without seeing one I don't know if its worth the risk of lower quality than the Islabikes, might try and pop along to a bike shop and take a look though.

I also found this Pinnacle Aspen 5 Spd, which my 10 year old thinks looks cool, and thats getting more important it seems, but again I doubt its the same quality as the Islabikes.

I was in a similar situation last year, and picked up an old second hand Raleigh for my daughter which we built up together as a project. Great fun and ended up with a very solid bike, albeit heavy. Some details and pics here. End result seems close enough to your Aspen.

Looks terrific, and I'd be very keen to do the same but finding a light frame is next to impossible for a kids bike, and the final weight if very important when dealing with a skinny 10 year old.

Weight is definitely the downside of our build. Nice frame but heavy, and the wheels are also on the heavy side. Outside of the frame, you can save a fair bit of weight by getting lighter tyres.

I have a young lad of 9 and a half who has just outgrown his Beinn 20 too. His little sister will be getting it but I don't think I can afford the Beinn 24 for him (I was better off when I bought the Beinn 20!). I'd love to get him a drop bar bike and groom him for stardom but that might have to wait. For now, I'll just watch this with interest.

I picked up a Triban 3 for my son's 11th birthday. I wasn't sure how he'd cope with the drop bars but there were no problems at all, and he's delighted with the ease of cycling compared to his old mountain bike.

We went for a Barracuda Kinetic 24" its about €250. Happy with the quality of it, has suspension forks which adds weight but it was hard to find a reasonable quality kids bike at the time that didn't have them. I reckon its about 12~14kg. Gears help a lot with removing weight as an issue IMO. He loves it anyway. The Beinn 24 would have been ideal but its €420.
