The walls in my new house are so bumpy, after years of wallpapering I suspect..
The previous owners seem to have painted over wallpaper, the paintable type. I want to change colour on the walls but I am wondering if this paintable wallpaper can take a new coat of pain without going soggy and getting air bubbles...Do I have to put up new paper? I will be getting walls stripped and skimmed in a few years when my budget allows but in the meantime I have to make do..

Oh and another question...I don't know what colour to paint my bedroom...It has 2 windows, quite spacious, Its north west facing but bright, has original wooden floors,i have dark enough furniture in it, just king size bed, lockers and chest of drawers..fitted wardrobe,

Again it has that paint-able wallpaper covered in a magnolia type paint that only seems to emphasise the bumps underneath it. I was thinking of putting a pattern wallpaper behind bed, and painting walls in another colour and getting curtains to match.. We want a warm relaxing vibe in the room but I havent a clue of how to match up colours etc..

Thanks in advance for any advice...

In your bedroom pick your wall paper and maybe paint the walls the lightest colour you can find back in your wall paper as your furniture is dark enough and will stand out. If your wall paper choice is just dark e.g. purple, green etc. maybe find a white with a hint of the purple, green etc.
As far as I know you can paint over wall paper a fair few times. If you are renting, just paint it, if its your own house and you have time and money get a steamer and strip it off. You might find bigger problems though under the paper.

Thanks, It my own house..Oh there definatly is bigger problems under there, ie: layers of old wallpaper..Id say it would have to be skimmed by plasterer after..Walls all over the house are the same..In one room they didn't bother taking down old man united border and you can see it through paintable wallpaper ;)

If you haven't move in maybe stripped the whole lot in one go. If you have moved in or are on a budget maybe to the most important rooms first. It sounds like they just made a mess of it :-(. If you paint over the paper again make sure to use matt paint and the lighter the paint the less bumps show up. To get ideas you can pick up the colour books in the DIY shops, they show pics of done up rooms in a certain colour scheme. I just ordered a new sofa and to get ideas i just googled images of interior with grey sofa. If you like warm, relaxing you might check out naturel colour schemes, cream, beige, stone, coffee, mocca etc. most wooden floors look good with that and so does dark furniture. Apart from ceiling I won't go for pure white walls as that can look very cold. But a hint of colour in the white makes a big difference. Also one main colour through the whole house brings all the rooms together and things flow, maybe have just one accent wall per room, like your wall paper in the bedroom. I have all walls jasmin white and brought in colour with cushions, flower pots, bright bold prints etc. Don't be affraid, its just paint you can paint over it again :-)

The walls may not be that bad. Years ago people hung this embossed or woodchip, then painted over it. I'd strip one room, use a steam stripper.
It may be possible to line the walls with lining paper before painting.
