New GPU €300~

Alright so I'm looking into getting a new GPU next month for around €300.
The max length my case can take is 320 mm.
    I play 1080p ultra settings and have a 4.6ghz i5 3570k so a good GPU is necessary.

My motherboard is a ASRock Z77 pro3 and I have a 500w 'be quiet!' PSU.
Any upgrades that are absolutely necessary (a new PSU etc) should not be added to the €300 budget.

    thanks a lot :D

    For sub €300 a R9 280x or 770gtx are your best options.

If you want spend a bit more the R9 290 is the way to go.

Which ones though? There are plenty r9 280x and r9 290 variants and I checked the 770 and it's too long for my case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Any of the Asus dual fan models, the MSI gaming, the Gigabyte windforce, Sapphire dual fan models or toxic tri fan.

There's a few other decent coolers as well but those are generally the best.

Alright thanks, going to go for the r9 280x toxic, should have best performance out of the 770s and r9 280x's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Are you sure that will fit? It's a big card.

Well it's 308mm and my max is 320mm so it should anyway ? :S

Hey I just read some reviews and videos about the Toxic and a lot of them are getting artifacts :/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mebvke_wUTg
    and tons more there :S

what would the best option after it be? Anything below 32cm in length and around €300 (will go higher if improvement is significant) is a contender.

    Thanks !

Thanks. Will probably get that Asus one next month then. do hardwareversand have guarantees and warranties for free do you know?

That one costs 368 on hardwareversand and probably like a crazy 300-500 pounds on amazon :s

Holy crap..just realised a 290 fits in my case.
Think I'll just save up and get this

    Unless you guys think otherwise

Nevermind, 1440p screens are too expensive. Going for a 280x. sorry for wasting time lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

If you want to play everything on ultra at 1080p with 60 fps then go for the 290.

The 280x will do the same for most games but not the big hitters like metro and crysis 3. With next gen game engines on the way though the 290 will serve you better in the long run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭yimrsg

I'd recommend saving for a 290 as the 280x's are currently a bit poor value wise as there's a premium on them due to mining. My own 280x card is €25 more expensive than it was 3 months ago.

500w be quiet! PSU is fine for either right ?

and you sure the r90 isn't overkill for 1080p ultra everything? I got a 4.6ghz cpu and 8gb of ram and a decent case and good ventilation

I've already answered that question. As for the psu 500w would be fine. Pushing a little tight for the 290 but it just means you won't be running as energy efficient as you could be.

Yeah you answered it when I asked if it'd be fine for 280x :p - as long as energy efficiency doesn't lower FPS or damage anything it'll be fine with me

here...500w is definetly not going to do well, the 290 at load takes 357w~ and my 3570k will take 267w~ under load
= 624w (and there's the other Ws from the other system parts )

700w PSU would give enough headroom right ?

    edit;
idk what the hell those benchmarkers were using but my CPU is taking 128w (used CPU-Z and CPUID to check) compared to their 267w with stock speeds?!
so it's 484w with the CPU + r9 290 running 3dmark (according to those benchmarks) + the other component's watt usage..
what if the thing goes over 500w and my pc catches on fire -.-

600w should be fine right ?!?

here's where i found the 290's power consumption:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,441 ✭✭✭xtal191

Pretty sure its 267w under load at 5ghz and 161w at stock

Those power numbers are for the entire system, measured at the wall. It includes motherboards, fans, and power waste in the PSU. A stock 3570k only uses 77 watts TDP.

Ah...never even thought it would be the total watt usage :p should've labelled it for noobs like me.
But if it's around 200w for the 4.6ghz and then 357w for the gpu then would a 600w be fine ?

Good god I gave accurate values of power consumption already.

A 290 will not use anymore than 300w, thats overclocked. More likely averaging around 250w. An overclocked 3570k will only use around 100w. The rest of the system 30-40.

Average gaming loads would only be around 400. A little more from the wall.

i'm a noob ok, thanks for the help but you don't have to be a d*** about it :p
that is what those reviews said anyway

    to 60+ fps and beyond

He wasn't being a dick about it. It just seemed like you weren't listening at all. You asked the same question multiple times. No one here has a problem answering any and all questions but if you're not listening it can get irritating.

Noob at what? reading? Opening your eyes? From what I see he took time out to help you, went into great detail to explain stuff to you and you didn't bother your a,ss reading it properly, wasting his time then called him a d,ick?

You need to check yourself before you wreck yourself. You're not "entitled" to help from anyone here. People do it for "free" to help people out, people that "appreciate" it. Ok D,ick.

Hope your New gpu catches fire. You twunt. See now that's being a d,ick.

Not being a dick. Just a pet hate of mine being asked the same question multiple times :)

I know you're new here and new to this so you're not going to just take what some random guy says on a forum as fact. At least you're doing some research.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

Yeah I don't know much about computer power usage so basically i'm a noob at it lol
at the start all i knew is that i had a good 500w psu and the thing recommends a 750w
then i thought yeah my 500w is fine from bloodbath's answer

then I did some research because you know, that's what you do before spending a lot of money and all these websites started showing crazy watt numbers, and these websites actually used the 290 while you guys were just estimating. so I came back here to ask why their numbers were so different and you got irritated while it was an honest question and the response was unnecessarily angry (d***y)

pfft i was listening fine but whatever, thanks for the help

Would you need any extra case fans for this card, using the Fractal Design R4?

Tempted to change my GTX770 (around €300) for this, as i'm still waiting on some items to be in stock. It's a fair increase for only €50 extra. Also, 600W Corsair PSU would be fine for the 29 290 as well, wouldn't it?

Nice increases in performance for 50 yo yos. 600w be good to go on that. Hell decent 500 would manage just better to have the six.

I have an antiphon with dust filters and stuff it's good but not as good as the r4, should I get more case fans too ?

Would be wise. As good as the r9s are they're gonna run hot, hence only quality brand names with the good coolers being recommended. And that is before any mention of overclocking.

It is not essential. Just recommended.

I can not find any damn reviews of the R9 290 Windforce 3x , only for the OC variant and the R9 290X Windforce.. Would you say it'd be as good as the R9 290 Toxic Tri-x temp wise? i've heard mixed reviews about windforces, some are amazing for cooling, others are decent.. The OCed windforce runs 42 db at load so normal Windforce must be like 37-40 or so

i think i'll get the gpu and see how it is temp wise without extra fans, if it's better than my current gpu i won't get more fans

The Gigabyte 290 is same as the 290 OC only for the OC is factory overclocked which you could do yourself anyway.

    290 - 947Mhz
    290 OC - 1040Mhz

Oh wow that difference is small
    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

The windforce tends to run a little louder anyway as the fans are smaller but there are 3 of them. Afaik sound values are taken from open testbeds so if you have a silenced case it's going to help reduce that.

From what I've seen the cards are designed to run hot, right up to the mid 90's. If my 7970 gets much hotter than 75-80c with it's overclock it can have issues. You have more overhead with the 290.

I'd say 1150 on the core would be a reasonable target.

Definitely add more fans if you have the option. The R4 only has 2 at stock. I'd add 3 fans, 2 more intake and an exhaust. I'd add 2 to the antiphon. 1 intake, 1 exhaust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

    yep the antiphon is silenced
72-74 Celcius degrees when gaming is good for the windforce right? it's only like 3db louder than the tri-x but 10*C hotter
my current GPU is like 75-85 on planetside 2, 80-85 in BF4 and like 85~ in Arma 3
(after like 20 mins of playing)

for the €50 less for the windforce...pfft not worth the 10*c less

What's your current gpu? Are you sure the fan speed isn't set on manual and is just constantly whirling at ~20%?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

sapphire hd 7870 xt boost (no manual overclock)
    around 1 1/4 years old

and yep I just played BF4 siege of shanghai 1080p ultra for 20 mins
    results:
    35-50 FPS
    sound like 55 db~
    70% fan speed 82*C

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

Just got compressed air and cleaned out my GPU outside...
Max temp with BF4 after an hour was 84*C and usually stayed around 77*C so it's still good I suppose :)
    just fyi.

Alright so I managed to sell my GPU for 2/3 of the normal price (it's in perfect condition) and now I'm buying the R9 290 TRI-X OC for €374 from mindfactory.de :D

It has over 550 sales on mindfactory.de (had 510 like a week ago) and has 20 really good reviews and I checked and mindfactory.de is supposed to be really good and actually has a better review than hardwareversand.de
    (Look up "mindfactory review")

I'm just letting you guys know because the tri-x OC runs like 10-15*C cooler than the windforce 3x and gets like 2-5FPS more and is like 10db quieter. On hardwareversand the windforce 3x 290 costs the same as the tri-x oc on mindfactory.

I'll let you guys know how this goes and maybe you guys who help people build PCs should look into mindfactory.de more? For some reason atm the shipping from DHL is free (but around a week ago was €19.99)7

    The really good 290:
This wont let me post the link so just look it up on mindfactory.

You can get the normal 50MHZ behind normal TRI-X for €364 too..

I got the non OC tri-x and flashed it with the OC versions bios with ATIWinflash from techpowerup.com and it works flawlessly. Might be a good option provided you have a backup gpu or iGPU just in case.
